Hello everyone , fairly new here. Been browsing and using the HAMB for a ton of information over the past year gathering parts for my build. Ive searched and cannot find anyone to thats came across this type of crack. Hopefully someone can help me out. I’ve been thru currently 4 blocks and can’t catch a break on any. 2 8BAs and I’m currently tearing thru my second 59A . All blocks so far have had catastrophic cracks . Cylinder walls between valve seats, oil pan mating surface. This block seemed to be the nicest of all of them and ran into a crack on one of the lifter bores. Has anyone came across this type of crack? Is this repairable or should I throw this into the pile. Almost ready to give up finding a decent block. Thank you in advance.

Most blocks can be saved, just depends if the cost is worth it, weld, sleeve or bushing, and machining.

That looks accessible enough it could be s***ched. I’ve known guys who have done it themselves, but I’d have to pay to have someone do it.

  4. It looks like you could drill/pin the crack tip (in the valley) to prevent further growth. A 1/16 inch bit should be OK. The lifter bore/support casting is not stressed highly and you might get away with a simple fix.

  5. It can be fixed just fine for a regular engine .
Isn’t the lifter boss across from it cracked as well ?

If the crack ends in the valley, and you can drill the end of the crack with a 1/8" hole, I'd do that and run it with no s***ching or even sleeving the bore. A little extra oil seeping into the bore from the valley won't hurt a thing.

Sure looks to me like the crack is all the way across the lifter valley. I'd look for another.

For me it would depend on which lifter bore it is.

Flatheads are known for vertical cracks between the centre bearing and the cam. If the lifter bores that are cracked are the centre ones then I would think carefully before using it. But if they are not in the centre lifters then I would likely use the block.

Do you want to spend the money for repairs? Sometimes it's worth it. Sometimes you can run with cracks like this one.
It doesn't cost anything except your time to load it up and take to an engine machine shop to look at it.
