Taking Bob Dylan's hwy 61 up the river was a nice drive years ago, I have not done it for about 30 years, could be lots of stop lights instead of charming small towns. Best wishes Jim, have a good trip !

Made it pretty far into Texas, stopped in Sonora for dinner. The car is doing fine, if I ignore all of its idiosyncrasies

Yeah that's how it works. It's been going swell. I'm done driving for the night. 600 miles to go tomorrow.

I gotta add, from ST. Louis on south, the levy is on both sides of the river, so no scenic views. 61 is still there, but really you may just pick your own route up to ST Louis. Have fun !!!!

North of STL the roads are pretty scenic on both sides of the river. On the Illinois side you're right on the riverbank to where the Illinois River joins the Mississippi. Then you cross the Illinois River on the Grafton Ferry (free) and then you're in hills away from the river for a long way. Very nice country but not in view of the river. The Missouri side isn't much different but not as many hills.

If time is a factor the Missouri side might take less time.

On both sides there are stretches where you're not close to "civilization" for pretty long stretches.

My route will be determined by where the checkpoints are, and I don't know that yet. It's noon and I'm almost out of Texas

Enthusiastic to see you doing this again with the Rambler. I'll be following along again and look forward to your posts.
Also, it should not go without notice you put some miles on her before you even got to the starting point.
Do they take that into consideration or additional credit, or award?

no, not really....although it might count for a few extra starting points if you tell a good enough story. That usually requires fixing serious failures

  24. All old cars have a personality... some have multiple ones....:eek:

The car actually looks nice out there.

I had a clutch problem this morning. I fixed it with baling wire.

Maybe I'll post a picture later.
