Sorry for being off topic. This is for my mother's street rod. It's a 31 Plymouth with the original axle with disc's adapted to it. It's got a Mustang box and the car rides good and steers nice.

The problem is my mother is older and is complaining she wants power steering.

I'm pretty sure there is no such thing as power boxes for those early mustangs....is there??

What about a power Vega box? I know they made them but I'm thinking they may be big.

I think it's gonna steer too easy.

    Opinions?? Ideas??

Yeh that wagon I love so much has power ***ist. It's a cross steer. The Mustang is a side steer.

What if you went to one of those new racks made for normal stuff (straight axles and dropped axles);)

That might give her alittle more ease....

Matt..how easy do they work? She's expecting to be able to turn this thing with one finger while sitting still (a little exagerated but you get the point)

Mustangs used a ram ***ist controlled by a valve on the center link/pitman arm union.

I have a buddy who uses a 605 box on his Model A, but that's cross steer.
Not sure about the side steer.

Why not just nab a box out of a later big car or truck? Anything can be made to work. Figure on beefing the frame a bit , it can pull through when you're not expecting it.

Any Saginaw box can be made to work. (came in Ford, Jeep, IH, and likely a few others I can't think of) The Jeep guys use some late 70's/early 80's Cadillac box, it's beefy and smooth.

You'll want a box out of a truck, or big car to handle the weight of your Mom's big car.

It is pitman forward, or back?

How long of a pitman arm?

How far does the stock box hang down?

Be ready to replace/modify your lower steering shaft, from the bottom of the column to the box, you can use a rag at the top, but I prefer a U-joint for smoothness and beef, and you'll need a lower u-joint at the box.

What motor is it? (to source a bracket for the pump)

I don't know really, I would think it would be as easy as m2 steering...my pinto steered pretty easy, if it was moving...

We have a ch***is in line meant for one, but it will be a while before we are testing the thing....

plymouth got fenders? put a mustang II in it. power steering in a side steer box... put on your thinking cap and go to the junkyard for another box..

rack and pinion is almost power steering. who sells the half rack for I beams???

how bout a bigger steering wheel? different ratio box or pitman arm change? all things to consider.

since it's all hid by the fenders?? why not get one of those mustang style power ***ist deals for the side steer?? never seen it done, but I've also never seen anyone's mom driving a 31 plymouth.

if my Mom were driving a HOT ROD.. I'd do whatever it took to keep her there.

My roadster truck has mustang power steering, push/pull set-up with axle, works so damn cool, but yea it does steer fast....wouldnt change a thing

  12. The Mustang II suspension guys figured out a way for them not to steer too fast. a special valve or somthing. Try Fatman Fabrications, Heits, etc.

The guys building 50's F serries trucks use a Toyota truck gear box with integral P/S.

clark...just spoke with Alan...here at Borgeson...Your best bet if you want to keep the side steer is a 70's chevy 2wd box...the 700 gear is kinda big ...but
it bolts to the inside of the frame and gets you side steer...thats about it without reaalllllyyyy doin a lot of fab...but if you can do cross steer then the
605 and 600 type gears, smaller,,,very available.....will do the job just fine...if it steers fast we make a shim kit for the preasure valve that is only 16.95 and gets the job done very simply...If I can help...Call Borgeson and ask for Bill and I will do my best ....BC
