Brake shoes came in last Friday, finally warm enough to put them on today. Perfect match. Started on one side, got old shoes off, put new shoes on. Started to put the adjuster in, whizz! Twang! Dang keeper flew off. My fingers were a bit numb, they get that way in the cold, was still pretty cool this morning, apparently I didn't get the keeper clocked right on the nail, when I pulled the shoes apart enough to put the adjuster in it slipped off and flew into no man's land. Looked for 30 minutes and never found it. So off to the parts store to get some new keepers....

Nothing. Nada. They had a few drum brake hardware kits, but nothing close enough to use. My guy said they don't have much call for drum brake stuff anymore, so they don't keep much in stock. Nothing in the computer, either. Even the warehouse they use doesn't carry stuff that old anymore, or have any way to find a subs***ute. Really. Me and my guy did a little online searching, found hardware kits on eBay of all places. I went home and ordered a complete hardware kit for 4 wheels off eBay. All the springs and keepers. Guess those 75 year old springs needed replacing anyway. Going to have over $150 in replacing just the front brakes. I remember when doing drum brakes might set you back $50 at most. Beginning to think I'd been better off to went ahead and spent the other $150 and got the Speedway disc brake kit. Would have been my luck it wouldn't have fit though. Oh well, if you want to play, you gotta pay....

We now have brakes again! My hardwire kit came in this morning, so I got to work. Didn't take but just a few minutes to put it all back together. Had to use my old upper springs though, the new ones were 1" short, and a bigger gauge wire, no way to stretch them enough to fit. Must have been a generic kit. Think it will be all right though. The shoes I took off were worse than I thought, one was into the metal in a spot or two. Funny they never squealed, just grabbed on that side. No more grabbing, hands off stop from 45 MPH it didn't pull to either side, so I think it's fixed.
