    thanks!

The odometer says I'm getting real close to having put 10,000 miles on it since i got the car in May. Its at 71300 or so, and it started with 61630.

looks like a shiny new car when it's wet, and you get it in the right light!

That thing would look great with a fresh coat of sea foam green. Roller or brush.

Dang! That pic of the ice on the windshield reminds me of a lot of winter days in my semi truck, fighting the ice, the roads, and the idiots driving on them! Don’t miss that one bit!

    Safe travels on home Jim!

I don't see the problem. Just use that Heads Up Display there to guide you. If the blinky dot is not on the red line, you're off the road.:D

My suggestion for the color to paint the car, nothing high tech, a roller and a mop would do the trick.
Your results may vary, depending on local EPA regulations.

    Thanks for all the posts.

The icing still occurs in certain conditions in the midwest, even on OT efi engines. A lot of vehicles in the 1960's with 6 cylinder engines came with a "heat stove" on the exhaust manifold, and a steel tube connecting to the air intake on the air cleaner. Some were spring tensioned to open at higher RPM; others had a manual lever that involved opening the hood and moving the lever.

Ice on the windshield can be managed by installing one of the snap on grille covers; which allows the coolant temperature to be higher, and the air through the defroster to be warmer.

Wet brakes were a fact of life before discs.

Not everyone has the opportunity to experience driving as it was 60 years ago; your posts have brought back memories.

Just curious Jim, what would the price be on the Rambler now?
PM me if you'd like, thank you.

Well, I made it home, with hardly any more problems. The clutch linkage popped off again when I made a gas stop in El Paso, so I popped it back on and gave baling wire #4 a few more twists.

Somewhere around Big Spring TX, the car hit the 10,000 mile mark since I got it (in May). This trip was about 5200 miles.

it's nice to be home, and get another home cooked meal. I also got a couple from relatives in Minneapolis.

here's what I look like from the perspective of the magnetic phone mount I stuck to the original radio faceplate...

I'll probably start at 4k, and go down from there as needed. I like to think I can get back all the money I wasted on old cars, until I put them up for sale and realize no one else is as stupid as me

You didn't happen to get any of that E85, did you? Every time I had to use that in a vehicle that wasn't designed for it my mileage went to heck. I'd lose 5-6 mpg.

I think it was just the combination of the head wind and the cold. Once I got back to Texas and headed west, and it started warming up, the mileage went back up.

One thing...it's supposed to have a 180 degree thermostat, but I put in a 160 to try to keep underhood temperature down to combat fuel boiling issues. I should have swapped in the 180 and see what it did, but I really didn't feel like going to that much trouble, since the car was still driving ok.

Still catching up but I wonder if you didn’t find yourself in an area selling “winter blend” fuel.

no clue of the purpose but even in a brand new car the mileage drop is sizable. Get some normal gas and ding! Back to normal.

fun post to follow along on

Winter in Michigan, the two 63 C10's are put to sleep under their winter blankets, all winterized, with a trickle charger on the battery.
I miss driving the C10 already.
Much planned for next summer when weather is warm once again, Lord Willing, I'm still on this beautiful Big Green and Blue World?
Thanks again Jim for the fun adventure, can't wait for the next one my friend.
I'm sure someone will come along and buy the "Famous Rambling Rambler" that you Jim, drove across the country.
After all its Famous Now, and I say that in a very sincere way my friend.
Glad you made back home safely.

I had a Dodge would do that, ice inside AND outside. The ice inside would break off and block the throttle open. Only way I could figure out to fix it was to replace the carb with one that didn't leak air around the throttle shaft.

    Bravo Squirrel!
Another great journey, completed, in a rust chariot that refused to be defeated by head winds, questionable fuel, sleet, rain and ice and snow!
The HAMB UNIVERSE, lives vicariously through your great adventures!

  29. ...glad you and the Rambler made it home OK,...if I knew you were making a checkpoint stop at the Savanna , Il. Army Depot; I would've driven up there to cheer you on, and snap a couple pics of that neat car.
It should sell fast @ $4g's, it's a world famous car!

An autographed 8x10 glossy with you kneeling by the driver's door should add value to the car sale, and increase the universe of potential buyers!
