Since I got my first ride in a 1934 Ford 5 window coupe when I was a little kid, I have always liked the style that coupe body presented. The swept back grille, the angle of the roof line and even the hood louvers. It made for a car that looked like it was going somewhere, fast. The windblown look. (not like the squarish, upright 32 coupes and sedans)

1957-59… My friend’s black 5 window Ford coupe running in A/Gas class with the big Oldsmobile motor, but still, a daily driver to high school and an after school job. (1st Photo is a copy from the web)

Our friend built his 1934 Ford coupe for his daily driver/ weekend Lion’s Dragstrip racer in the A/Gas class, there was no doubt as to what motor to use. A big Oldsmobile motor, multiple Stromberg carbs, pistons, hot cam, and a LaSalle transmission. Most of the local hot rod coupes at Lions had similar set ups to include SBC motors and Cad/Buick powered coupes. That was the hot ticket in the early days of late 50s to early 1960. The sound of a "big" Oldsmobile, multiple carb motor on our Westside of Long Beach house driveway was tremendous and exciting.

My brother was envious of his friend’s hot rod build and wanted a car to match or beat the times at Lions. He never said a bad word about his friend’s 34 coupe, but deep down inside, he wanted a fast car to race and be victorious. When he saw the Oldsmobile Sedans of Harryman/Edwards, Doug Cook, Gene Adams and Tim Woods, he knew he could have a fast Oldsmobile Sedan and still carry the requisite 4 people when cruising.

Being friends, they never raced the 1951 Olds Sedan vs 34 Ford Coupe, or for that matter, the 58 Impala vs the 34. When we were finished with our first version of the 40 Willys Coupe with the 283 SBC and Strombergs, the thoughts crossed his mind, but, the race never came about. The listed times from the Lion's Dragstrip timing tickets were very similar, but, the friends just did not race against each other.

here is the build thread for my covid 33...I built it pretty cheap for a 33-34 3 window...wish it was steel but I am not a rich man, just wanted a traditional but wicked looking 33 before I croak...

Every time I come across these photos of days gone past, it always makes me happy to see what I thought was a cool hot rod that we saw cruising around in So Cal. I had my Harley Sportster and my 327 powered sedan delivery for the various photoshoots. When it was a custom motorcycle, I rode to the photo shoot on my Harley with a backpack full of camera gear strapped to the rear seat support.(a custom made “sissy” bar I designed and finished)

But, when it was a hot rod of sorts, I drove the 327 powered 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery to the location of the shoot. Usually, my wife went with me in the Sedan Delivery, but there was no room for her and the camera gear on the back of the custom, Harley Sportster. The backpack took up her normal seat area strapped to the chrome back support.

So, for this location, it was middle ground for us to travel to Long Beach Harbor and for Larry Cerny to drive down from up North. During the photo shoot, my wife took notes as she talked to the girl that came along to the shoot. The familiar notes gave me extra ideas during any writings for a good story of the hot rod builder, and experiences with So Cal hot rod cruising.

Larry Cerny had the right idea in the late 60s early 70s. The high performance street coupe represented the gas coupe look for the street. With all of the speed parts included, the performance equaled the look.

The front Moon Tank was added after the 1960 ruling that all interior gas tanks had to be moved out in front or in the trunk to pass the tech inspections. So, the craze of Moon Tanks moved from the dragstrip action to the street style, much to the horror of the insurance companies and the CHP.

The Cragar S/S wheels were accepted quite readily for all types of hot rod/custom car installations.

Not only did this 1934 Ford Coupe take the drag racing build to the next level, his use of Cragar S/S wheels made it look rather racy. The motor was not just your run of the mill, dual four barrel SBC.

It was a Hilborn Port Injected SBC motor modified for everyday street use. The Hilborn Port Injectors worked perfectly and the SBC motor sounded as if it was staging at Lion's Dragstrip, when we moved the 34 for different photo angles. This 34 Ford Coupe had one of the only daily driven Hilborn Port Injectors adjusted for street driving.

Finally got this beater going down the road. The little 276 we put together runs really well, and hasn’t put a rod out the side yet, so I guess we didn’t forget anything down below!
