Hot Rods Old Hearses and Ambulances

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by khead47, Jun 22, 2022.

  1. There was a time when a used hearse was fairly cheap. I remember looking in the classifieds back in the late ‘70s and seeing nice low mileage ones for less than a $1K. My dad almost let me get one so I could park it front of our neighbor’s house to spite them. It would have been fun to have been able to do that but my mom being the sensible one put a stop to that idea.

  8. I don't think it looks like a hearse but it does kinda look like a coroner's ride.

I don’t either! But almost everyday I drive someone asks me if it is a hearse! To me it just looks like a lowered wagon! But then I am kinda fond of ‘65s!

Reminds me of one of the reprobates who used to drink at the local watering holes when we were young. Son of the local funeral home, Roach and Sons. Yes his nickname was Digger, and he was relatively tall and skinny... what can I say?

40's and early 50's an automatic was a bit rare besides the drivers of those vehicles were raised on standard transmissions. Reliability of early automatics was not that grate and I don't think they wanted to break down during a funeral.

Just joined the group and looking forward to chatting. Here is my 1953 Pontiac/Barnette Combination. Pictures are when it was still in service in 1973 and then when I found it many years later. Currently undergoing it's restoration.

When I worked at a Mobil station in 1984-85, a guy used to come in regularly for gas in a 1970 Pontiac hearse with Thrush sidepipes. Herman Munster would have approved.

  20. There was a very similar hearse of this type in Bill's junkyard in Rhode Island. It was sored inside the building. It used to be a hearse for children. Bill would never part with it.

There was a hearse which got a lot of press in HRM, Car Craft, etc. in the '70s: street-machine style typical of that era, flames over black, bigs & littles, serious rake. I can't find any images of it online.
