Just finished rebuilding a 9” chunk with a full kit and new 3.50 gears. Took great pains to get everything set right. Test drive today revealed a fairly loud whine on decel. Quiet when accelerating and steady speed. So, it’s coming back apart. My question is, after a 27 mile test drive do I now have used bearings or new bearings when setting the preloads? Thanks!
Before you take it all apart you might try adding or subtracting shims a few thousands on the pinion. I can’t remember which would be better for deaccelartion whine. Might save you some work. If my memory severed me whine on deacellarztion could be too much back lash, but pinion shims are easier! Lol Bones
Thanks for the replies. I did have a strange thing with the setup. Pinion depth was marked .995 and it took a little over .060” in pinion shims to get that. Then, when checking the pattern it was way off and I had to remove nearly .050” of the shims I had just put in to get a decent pattern on the teeth. Everybody says if you get the pinion depth right the tooth pattern should be real close. Sure wasn’t the case with this one.
Wow, that shim stack is way out of normal. I've set up a bunch of 9" punkins in my day, and somewhere between 020" and .030" was usually where they ended up. At any rate, you don't need to take the pinion carrier apart, and just keep the cones for the diff with the bearing they came from. When I got lost, on tooth pattern, I'd just go back to basics, put a .030" shim for the pinion carrier, set the backlash to about .005" and go from there.
