I have had this vintage poster for about 25 years now.
It's still one of my favorite pieces of cl***ic artwork, that reflects the Pacific Northwest.

    Hello,

The roadside view we used to get on our early evening runs back home to the Westside of Long Beach from the Southern Orange County surfing road trips. (or even from San Diego County surf spots) If we stayed for the "evening gl*** off" after spending all day surfing, resting, eating and more surfing, it was time well spent.

It was a goal to spend as much time at the local surf spots while far from home. When any car/station wagon rolled around the "Big Bend" on the I-5 freeway, it takes a short few blocks to be able to see this giant screen facing parallel to the freeway. it was a major distraction of sorts, but we always had a game... to name the movie or stars on the screen.

The Mission Drive-In theater used to be located right next to the I-5 freeway on the San Juan Capistrano side of the freeway at the time. The other side of the freeway was just rolling hills and hardly any development. Not like it is today, with the multiple car dealers, industrial buildings, homes back in the hills and the most crowded road leading back through the mountains to Lake Elsinore. The term Mission Drive-In was in connection to the old, historic, California Mission located a few blocks away.

If we were going to stay for a longer road trip, we did camp out in our sedan delivery and other vans. But, for a drive-in movie, this was the closest and only place within a few minutes to the surf spots via the coastal highway.

Bill Drysdale has captured the essence of early drive-in scene in this part of Orange County. "...Freeway close as many advertising continues to blast us these days..." Even the sneaky "surfer" and his friends trying to keep the costs at a minimum... HA!

I'm sure a Great memory from your past driving by the "P***ion- Pit" thats what us Wi. kids called the Drive- Ins, I remember $1 carload nights, also a Great date venue in my youth. I remember going with my Mom, older Sister when I was preteen then with my children when they were young. I believe we only have one left in Milwaukee Wi. area, Now we go to huge multiplex theaters with many comforts including Pizza and priced accordingly, last time for us, $15/prepaid on line $20/ at the door, popcorn $12/15, small pop $7, candy bar $5, everything changes with time. Hello,

We must have blasted past this shop a couple of times to and from the West to the East on our long road trips years ago. Drivng out in that area seems the same, as the country side looks similar and we are wondering what the next gas station/café is going to pop up.

But, for others, it may have been a rest stop to check out the artwork of iconic folks and cars from our past history.

For those Route 66 searching folks: The Econo Smog and Tune shop is located on West Broadway between Quivera and Cibola Street in Needles, CA. When my wife and I went through this area, we were on Highway 40 and blasted right through Needles. So, we missed this artwork.

This area of the Southwest has seen its better days and it was nothing to write home about on any trip.
But, for the Route 66 fanatics, there is Elvis, Space Aliens and a 41 Willys Coupe as a homage to the Route 66 legend.

Or the artist + the owner of the shop is an old drag race guy with some ties to the blue SWC Willys Coupe?

One of my older designs for T-shirts, I added the square sprocket holes, to make it look like a piece of film to be run through a projector.

    Hello,

We have been to Oakland in various cars and road trips since the mid 60s with my wife. But, earlier, we had visited some of my dad’s friends living in the area when we were on our California road trips in his Buick sedans, the 1949 and 1953 4 door sedans. But, it was the closer touring and photo trips that my wife and I took that remains the most vivid of our S.F. Bay Area adventures. The city is quite dense, like all big cities everywhere.

For us, the draw was the old Oakland Roadster Shows that moved from the San Francisco proper area across the bay to the different locations until it changed names and moved South.

The Fruitvale Business Improvement District (BID), in collaboration with a local artist and volunteers, painted a mural on Transmatic Transmission, a mechanic shop located on 3901 International Boulevard on the corner of 37th Avenue and International Boulevard.
