Hey all. My uncle was out looking at this truck that some guy told him about and he found that the tail gate was embosed with the letters GMT rather than GMC. This set him back a little bit since he had no idea what it was. He called me since I have bit more knowledge on GMC/Chevy's than he does but I don't know. He said that the owner thought it was a '48 and my uncle said it had a front end similar to my 53 GMC panel truck. Is this a rare truck? Did GMC embose GMT in the tail gates sometimes? I know that they put that name on the chrome stripe above the dash grill but I've had never heard of or seen it anywere else. Thanks Panelrodder My unlce thought this might be Canadian built?
Yeah, the earlier ones said General Motors Truck and had a kind of a cool emblem with a big curvy M and the G and T nestled inside of the curves. I think it changed to GMC in the mid thirties.
They also came with a stainless piece on the hood sides that said "General Motors Truck" The tailgate might have come off an earlier truck, early thirties, I think.
I'm getting, from a couple sites, that the gate is probably off of an earlier truck rather than being original. The gate that is on it has the GMT stamped into it not just on it which is what was confusing. And there are no other emblems on it which adds to the confusion. From all angles it seems that the truck is untouched to, as in not customized. My uncle is very qualified to see the signs of work too! I guess my reservation in accepting the idea that the gate is just from an earlier truck. Aren't they narrower than the Advanced Design trucks? Either way, I will try for some pics to see what that might yeild. Thanks for the info so far... keep it coming. Panelrodder
According to http://www.oldchevytrucks.biz/catalog4/t4.html, the first GMC was in late 1936. Here is a picture of the script on a tailgate that was on one of my 1937 GMC's. Looking at: http://www.oldchevytrucks.biz/catalog4/0110.html the information here contradicts the earlier URL, the listing shows a GMC tailgate for 1936-1939, go figure.
Interesting. I guess the truck would only be worth the purchase price if it was a very cheap price. The cab of this truck would basically need to be replaced straigh up unless you wanted to buy the entire patch panel catalog to fix it! I will let my uncle know. Thanks guys! Panelrodder
Me neither.... hence my astonishment! I hope my uncle is up for getting a picture of it but it doesn't sound as though he is. Panelrodder
Back in the day, GM, Ford , and Mopar, were hard on people making replacement parts with their logo on them. So most replacement parts with a logo, had it changed enough to p***. Instead of Chevrolet on a hub cap, it would say Cherrolet, ect. I suspect this is an aftermarket tail gate from back in the day.
