I'm moving from TN to PA, and looking to purchase my first t-bucket. However, I have heard and looking for other members in PA who can elaborate, that such vehicles need fenders and a hood. I read an old post on here from 2004, have the laws changed or are they still that ridiculously strict? Appreciate any input, TY
I believe that I would Google the town you're moving to and call the dmv there. There are some places that do have silly laws like that, but they're not enforced.
This is taken from PUB 645 on the PA Dot web site and I think it answers your question in a good way. "Specially constructed, modified, collectible vehicles and street rods may not have an original manufacturer’s specification. Therefore, these vehicles are required to meet Pennsylvania vehicle equipment, inspection and operating requirements in order to be ***led in Pennsylvania. Applicants must provide a detailed description of how the vehicle is configured, constructed and equipped. Street rods are not required to be equipped with bumpers, fenders or engine coverage as originally manufactured. If the hood (top and/or sides) are removed from a street rod, the engine fan must be enclosed with a shroud designed to protect the fan from accidental contact from the outside." PUB 645 is available here in it's complete form, lots of info in it. https://www.dmv.pa.gov/VEHICLE-SERV...-Safety-Inspection-Program/Pages/default.aspx
I used to live in Pittsburgh and the good thing is that They have licensed DMV "shops" all over the place that can help you out. Ask the local guys at a show and they will direct you to a rodder friendly place.
The "street rod" plates, which are furnished for vehicles of our ilk, actually have a picture of a bucket T without a hood.
