Here’s one Plymouth for sure should have made!

 

^^ Reminds me of a 1959 Ford station wagon my dad and I cut down onto a pickup for use on the farm about 50 years back.

Wish I had a photo to share but you have to believe this zero bucks project looked like ass.

 

First picture "Banzai" is as Ray Kobel found it when he went to California in 1962. It was brought back to NY and hot rodded. Picture two is a 36 Willys sedan that my friend Willie "The Welder" Feyh built while I was hanging out at Speed Garage in Elmhurst Queens, NY. It was sold to Phil Belomo and raced as a C/G. Someone here on hamb had it and sold it about 3 yrs. ago. Picture 3 is the rolled and pleated interior of Banzai. The final picture is of Banzai when I owned it, I had an accident with it the 3rd day I owned it and repaired it then painted it yellow. Oh they were Bothe 36 Willys sedans.

This was a 4dr sedan that got wrecked and turned into a Ranchero before Ford made them around 1956.

This came too mind, a pickup tow Buick, think the conversion is made pretty nice, really like the solution of the roof, just moved the c pillar forward, alot nicer than most conversions.

My 42 Olds Model 76 home built ute pickup in progress.
I used the rear quarter windows stood on end and swapped sides then trimmed length for the small side windows. The back window is composed of the top of the rear door window frames trimmed and spliced in the middle using the original back door glass. 1/2" emt conduit serves to create a divided rear window to match windshield.
I designed the bed with AutoCad 2000. The bed has 1/2" emt conduit for the radiused trim.
Olds 307 (with non computer Quadrajet and HEI distributor) and 2004R plus hang down A/C unit and 1964 Rambler American 1" bore dual master cylinder under the floor and 12 volt conversion - otherwise all original mechanically at 81K miles including the drum brakes all around that stop straight every time. The 307 in mixed highway and stop and go driving averages 16 mpg
This is my only truck, so it is seen out and about frequently doing truck like things.
I hope to finish it next year.
Some vehicles from 1942 had painted bumpers and trim due to our WWII involvement. As such I am considering painting the deteriorated chrome bumpers and all brightwork to match the off white rims as opposed to spending 6-10K dollars on all new chrome like many base level trucks of the era. Any + or - comments about this are welcomed below.

Beautiful job. Looks GREAT. Thanks for posting. As far as the chrome goes, take a look at sandblasting it and powder-coating with exhaust header type chrome-like finish. I'm sure that would be much less cost and comes very close to a chrome appearance.

 

There must have been hundreds of these accessory beds sold, they were a common sight in Oklahoma when I was a kid

 

A local antique shop has this 37 Studebaker Express pickup bed made into a trailer for sale. Would be perfect for a late 30’s sedan to pickup build.

 

There is a thread on the HAMB about doing a 49 to 51 Ford sedan to pickup. Unfortunately, I don't recall the members user name and had no luck with a search. I think the last two photos are from that thread. The first photo is a factory styling exercise that I always thought they should have built.

 

I was tempted to post that truck of Chad's a few times but at the last second I would delete it knowing how well he is liked here. I am talking about the truck A Boner posted above. It is one of his better ones he has done. Will see if he ever finishes it, so far he is still working on it.

 

During WWII you got extra gas ration if you had a pickup over a car,
probably figured as a commercial use rig, so many cars became pickups
in that era...
ergo the "kits" probably Sears or Wards Catalog

 

I have never seen a chrome look powder coating that was any more realistic than just painting with fine flake metallic silver basecoat and then urethane clear.
Do you know of a really good source ?

 

Somewhere back in my past I remember a feature article in a car magazine of a box Nova turned into an El Camino using a 57 Ford SW rear glass. Thought it was a sweet looking conversion.

The 49 Ford ute above looks a lot better than it's stock version-

 

They look a lot better when guys re-do the rear quarters to eliminate that hidious wheel opening thing!

 

The build videos for this truck are very interesting. He would be one heck of a shop class teacher. Some of his builds get a little on the wild side, but like with this truck build, when he keeps it on the conservative side, the results are fantastic. He explains every step, and many on here could/would learn lots watching his videos, (like this particular one). So far the only thing I would change is to drop the front suspension 2 or 3 inches! The 35 Plymouth 4 door starting point, was one ugly duckling…the truck version is something Plymouth should have built. He has a video on YouTube, almost every day, and he is building this in “weeks”, when 98% on here would lucky to do this in a year, or 2 or 3, or even more.

 

This thing is the car of the month for me.

 

That was executed perfectly.

 

Maybe the next project.......

 

That Plymouth truck is the best looking Bad Chad car. He most definitely is prolific.
