A very good friend of mine is building his 427 Hi-Riser and has been collecting for a very long time. Nearly complete, he has hit a snag and is looking for info. The original cap n rotor are long gone... he has a cap and rotor but the cap is far too tall and the rotor is about 1/2 inch too short.(within the cap)((Also getting very close to the front carb and installation of the wires in that area is becoming impossible.)) I assume a shorter cap and rotor would be ideal. He has been searching parts houses.. but unfortunately.... a good parts person is becoming so very scarce. Obviously Cragar has been long gone for years..... but I was wondering if anyone has info or possibly another cap and rotor that may fit? The Diameter of the base(cap) is 3.375. Any suggestions would be extremely helpful. Thanks guys.
Is the distributor for a Hi rise different than a standard FE? An 8 lobe dual point is not particularly significant in todays market with all the electronic models available. I think Pertronix makes a pretty stock looking dist. with vacuum advance for an FE. If you can't find a cap and rotor this might be an option.
Looks like the carb(s) are mounted back asswards... if so, he needs to remove the secondary metering block for distributor cap clearance and use a metering plate instead..
Please don't let the street rodders here talk you into going electronic, those cragar distributors are cool and rare... I have a cragar distributor here, the cap fits perfectly on a 1960 chrysler dist that I have here, fits a lot of mopars 60's and 70's https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=944573&cc=1327698&pt=7120&jsn=411 rotor also https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=45831&cc=1327698&pt=7136&jsn=414
My suggestion is to start looking at older stuff such as Y block parts for a cap and sometimes a 6 cylinder rotor. I found out that seldom did they make their own parts without copying something readily available. I remember seeing rotors with a flat to drive them but can't remember on what. Did I mention I'm old and have little memory? Most besides GM used the 2 straps to hold the cap on. Because the little Dodge hemi had dual points, that might be a place to start looking.
@Jeff Norwell if Marks uses a common Chrysler cap I have ALOT of them if you need a quick measurements. The caps and rotors are the same big or small block for a couple of decades!!
The Chrysler stuff also fits Accel distributors. Plus I don't know about the stuff today but years ago the Accel rotors would break without warning.
The cap and rotor are Mopar parts as I stated above in post #4, for anyone that cares the ignition points for these are standard ignition FD8081 they are from Ford 6 cyls from 48-64
If you could turn them around and still have the front one clear the distributor you will be fabricating new linkage. Ford didn’t mount them that way just to be different.
Nah, GM and Chrysler always mounted their carbs backwards. Ford did it to clear the distributor. If you have dual metering block carbs, you have a couple options. Mount them sideways (requires all new linkage), get a really tall intake and use a crab cap, or use a offset distributor.
No, they are oriented correctly for that application. The stock progressive linkage also works very well
Thanks @Moriarity for chiming in; I have trouble finding consumables for my YC Mallorys . I should have waited to see how desperate the OP was in his search.
Hi-That cap and rotor looks an awful lot like the Mopar dual-point that came on the 340's in the Swingers and Dusters-just wonderin'
