    Awesome photos Tim!
Those hangars in the background have a ton of aviation history in them... Lots of experimental aircraft were conceived and built in them over the past 75 years. Great weather, great rides, great day! ;)

Well, as a first-time spectator I have to tell you it was amazing. Lots of racers, lots of spectators. The racers are serious too - most made many, many passes and ran full tilt. I have a lot of photos and videos, but none would significantly add to what’s already been posted.

Hey @Bad Bob, I looked for you at the top end, but when you were there I wasn’t and visa-versa. I couldn’t get by the iron-clad security at the gate to the pits to drop by. Maybe next time or at the GNRS.

    One heck of a day.

It was about 48* when I left this mornng about 6:15 to meet up with my buddy before heading to Flabob. With no side windows in the pickup, and of course no heat, it was a bit on the chilly side, but I layered up and it was fine. When we got to the entrance Bad Bob was stuck on the side of the road with a dead battery. My buddy has a set of jumper cables with him, so I spun my car around so we were starter motor to starter motor and gave Bob a jump start to get him going.

I got a ton more photos today, most of the pics above are of the pits and the racers, but the car show was pretty impressive too, though poorly organized; so I'll go through my photos and start posting them up when I get a chance. I got some video too, some right at the start line.

I have to say, I like the addition of the OHV motors, it expanded the variety of cars running, and for the most part they all were ineteresting cars worthy of being a part of the event; though at least a few were just belly button cars, running gear wise. Not sure why they were there, heck my pickup could've been running if that's what they were allowing. But, overall it was a damn good event, epic even. I sure hope the airport and the club all did well with this, and that it becomes an annual event. It has the potential to be THE west coast event for traditional hot rods and custom cars.

Need to work on the car show part of it though, that didn't seem to be a priority, and it was VERY loosely organized. In fact, we arrived just after the gates opened, and we were routed all they way through the airport from the south end all the way back up to the north end and outside of the airport to park around the entrance. WTF???? I asked one of the guys about parking up around the buildings and he told me no, that was only for the racers. Bullshit, the racers were all going into the pit area, not around the buildings; and it was wide open asphalt. Later on cars that showed up hours later were all routed in and parked there. Come on guys, you shove the eary arrivers out the gate and bring the later arrivals into the event? What is up with that. I'll volunteer to organize that part of the event for next year.

Thanks for sharing guys, killer event for sure. Hopefully they fired up those R-1830's too. Such a sweet sounding radial.

i was there too. great cars and a lot of people.
    now for the down side.
price was to high to spectate.
i couldn't find a price anywhere. should have it on the flyer.
no where to sit and watch. need bleachers.
couldn't get pictures for all the people at the k rails.
    no handicap parking. quite illegal.
can't even see the race cars until after the event. most people had to leave.
general public not allowed in the pits. last time i went to a drag race that was like that was when i went to lions and you had to buy a pit pass.
i am sure there are reasons for this since it was the first one. maybe talk to the guys that run eagle field.

My first time to the event, and I had a blast. I would like to have been able to walk around the pits and view the race cars. That is fairly common for most historic racing events, so I was a little surprised the pits were blocked off. Also I have to agree the parking and "show" seemed not well sorted. However, the event and the location was great, and I can't wait for the next one. I need to look into how to get started actually running my car. Where can I get some experience? Does anyone have an idea of the end speed of the average car running?

Also from all I heard leading up to the event the “show” was just spectator parking for old cars and wouldn’t imagine they put a lot of thought into that.

it’s a first year event that looks like it came into being possible kinda last minute.

I’d allow for some bumps along the road, let’s not all go from bitching that there aren’t any car shows for three years right to complaining about “I had to drive threw a car show andpast race cars to get to my parking spot at an insane gathering of cool cars” quite so fast.

on that note I will allow that maybe I’m reading something online and missing your tone. But end of the day this looks pretty insanely cool

It looks like a great gathering. There's bound to be issues especially the first time in a new spot. I'd be disappointed not to be able to get close to the cars & action.
I'd hate to be driving back to San Francisco in a topless A roadster with my best bud on his Harley.

First off, I had a great time and I can't begin to understand everything it takes to put on an event such as this. You just don't write some ideas on a cocktail napkin, print up some flyers and you're good to go. That said, I agree with the above posts and the issues raised. I left Redlands at 6am with some donuts and a mug of coffee. I took the back roads and got to the airport about 6:40. I drove up to the main entrance and was told the vintage car parking was at a different entrance off 46th St. When I got to the correct entrance there were 15 or so cars waiting for the gates to open. When the gates were opened at 7am we were then led on a round about route to an area right by the entrance I tried to come in initially. I was told to park in front of the cafe but to do so required a 3 point turn around. All in all it was a cluster F. Later arrivals were able to park inside along with the invited car club vehicles. So much for being early.

As far as pricing goes I don't really have anything to compare it to except for maybe the Moon Eyes Anniversary Party at Irwindale. 20 bucks for spectators. And it would have been nice if the TROG entrance fee included access to the pits. Will I got back next year if they hold it again? Probably but it would be nice to see if the organizers make any changes to address the concerns raised here. JMO

I really wanted to be there for this cool event of "TROG" at "FLABOB", but I had other commitments, so it was not to be. I am so glad that those, that did make it to FLABOB, have been so kind, as to post a lot of great photographs, of how it all went.

Thank you to all that posted!

I wanted to take the time to show you all a bit of history there at FLABOB, and a bit of what you all probably didn't get a chance to see, unless you actually knew some of the aircraft owners that occupy those hangars there at FLABOB.

Back in 2012, there was this great gathering at FLABOB, known as the " The FLABOB Flying Circus and Cavalcade of the air "
The people that put it on had printed up these cool little booklets that shows all of the aircraft that were hangared there and a brief description of the aircraft. Back in the day, the prices for admission were far lower than what ever the price was for this gathering for TROG at FLABOB.

    IMG_7646 (2).jpg IMG_7647 (2).jpg

I am sure that all of the attendees for "TROG" this year, quickly found out just how small the airport really is, that and the fact that the airport was there, long before the rest of the city grew up around it. The airport is right in the middle of a residential area.
It's great that there is a lot of, good local support to keep the airport going, its a living piece of history!

Here is a peak at some of the great planes that were constructed there, that are behind closed doors, unless you knew some of the owners.

    DSC_1187 (2).JPG DSC_1252 (2).JPG DSC_1253 (2).JPG DSC_1254 (2).JPG IMG_0329 (3).JPG

Just like vintage hot rods that we all love and still operate today, the cool vintage machines from the past, whether a full on replica, painstakingly built to exacting detail just like the original, those planes are hot rods of the sky's indeed.

I just want to thank the powers that be, from the "FLABOB" airport, and the official people that put on "TROG", for choosing the "FLABOB" airport for this years event.

This event this year, was the first time it was being put on there, so indeed, there is going to be some issues that will be dealt with and ironed out, if "TROG" is going to be back next year at "FLABOB".

And I am sure there will be a lot of people, that will be very positive about making sure that "TROG" will be back there, next year in 2023 !

    Thanks from Dennis.

See below, it wasn't just me. The main intent of my post was to say what a great event it was; I'd hope that came through. I also offered up some hopefully constructive criticism, not to tear down the event or the organizers, but to bring up something that I think should've been obvious from the get go. I even offered up my help to make it better, not just complaining, looking to help where obvious help is needed.

Exactly my point! Thank you for backing me up on that.

Well, tell your friend it really wasn't either one. It was a gathering of a bunch of really cool traditional hot rods and customs (and motorcycles), which some were allowed to run down a track, kind of grudge match style from what I could tell; and others were parked around as an outdoor show. There were also vendors, and a small swap meet. It was all cool, great fun. And had a lot of potential to be even better.

@41 GMC K-18 - in my opinion two of the most beautiful planes ever made - the Comet and the Caudron.

I fully agree, those two planes are in a class by themselves indeed!
Every one of those replicas that Bill Turner built, are masterpieces !
I did a 30" X 40" pen and ink drawing of the Comet a number of years ago, the lines on that plane are incredibly sleek and elegant.
    Thanks from Dennis.

This event will require baby steps…. It wasn’t even finalized until the LARS weekend and most of the planning was done 3,000 miles away from my understanding. The plan is for it to take place for many years to come I'm told.

Understood. Again, I think I was intentionally positive about the overall event and only pointed out where things could be improved. And I also volunteered to work with them to help, not just blathering pointless criticism. I hope it does take place for many years to come.

To all you guys THANKS for the pictures and commentary!
This years east coast event was canceled because of the hurricane but last years event was a hoot! Just an enjoyable time!

  28. Well....I drove there, got there about 650. There was a line, maybe 20 cars. Started to pull up, a little at a time, then when I got to the gate, it wouldn't start. Blues4u and his friend gave me a jump and i drove right into the pits.
All in all....it was a great event. Lots of great race cars, TONS of people, great swap meet, saw many friends. Got to run twice....didn't want to push the issue since I seem to break on the way home, lol. Won both races, even the one I wasn't ready when the flag dropped!
Having said that....they did stress that this was the FIRST one, hopefully of many, so there will be some growing pains. YES, they should have opened the pits to walk-ins. But, there were TONS of people and many old cars there, spread out all around the buildings. There's only maybe 6 people in charge. The next one should be much better planned. I can't complain....LOVED it! It was fun! My Coupe ran great and didn't break! Saw friends, and some guys from the HAMB I have never met in person(Chadillac). Please go easy on the criticism. I'll try to get my pics on here as soon as I get a minute.
