I presume there are no holes for a reason, I'd gather that loss of inherent strength being a solid flange as the holes reduce the surface area of parent material. Also the forces required to turn both pulleys. That whine is the nature of the beast.

How tight are you running the belt? Too much tension on that belt will make it whine louder.

With my luck, I'd drill it and end up getting it unbalanced somehow and cook input shaft bearings.

As for the other thing... my truck is where I go when I want to make all that whining to go away. :D:D:D

I've seen quite a few back in the day that were drilled. Never hears of a failure due to holes.

Don't remember the size or number drilled just that the guys that did it said it greatly reduced noise.

A buddy had an under hood setup on his truck and drilled it to help hide the fact he had one.

Don't bother with the holes. A LOT of work for little gain.

I've got a later model car with a blower. The drive is a serpentine belt with small pulleys, it whines..! The best part of the drive !
Get your wife some ear plugs, or muffs.

The whine is one of the advantages of the blower besides more power and looks, take one of them away = whole concept ruined
Buy her some of those phone earplugs thats popular nowadays, then she can listen too "music" and you can continue listen to that real whine music

Like most said about wife , maybe better that she does not ride, Tell her the buzzing in night stand is annoying,
You can drill holes to let air escape, you will not brake pulley Nor never seen pulley failure, If you decide to keep the wife covert to serpentine
(probably will have to be custom-made) then more likely will slip especially if
6-71 or bigger & not least 2-1/4 wide belt , the wider the better , it can be made / done

  20. Everything about a 71 style blower induces whine. The gears, the rotors, the magical sound when the throttle is open and boost starts. It would be easy enough to take a pulley and put some holes in it but I question whether the results would justify it. Most of those I saw drilled were the old 1/2" flat tooth which could only stand so much rpm and stress anyway. When I went from the 1/2 to the 8mm, the belt life almost tripled. Then the big blowers came out and the 14 and 11 mm drives came into play. However, at slow engine speeds, if all of the parts are good, you should be as quiet as possible. No boost, engine running on vacuum, gears good so there is a minimum of gear noise and rotor to rotor and case clearances correct so no scuffing. I would be curious of sound level with a DB meter. :) One thing to add, as I remember people were drilling the pulleys to reduce blowing the belt off at upper rpm.

16 groove serpentine pulleys used on boats. looked to go that for the dragster. don't need belt protection.
currently run 1/2 pulleys. cant hear any whine over the zoomies.
