I finally bought a shoebox Ford. It's a 50 coupe from Georgia, amateur restoration, flatty, stick. It's a solid car that needs chopped. Anybody know the guy on egay in Missouri that will chop your carand put in primer, no glass for $1800? Seems reasonable if he not a butcher. I'm goin' to the Pileup for the first time. Hope I can connect with someone in the midwest. Anybody adventurous enough to cut it up there? Since this pic, I've lower 3 inches in front and 1 in back anf lost the Coronado kit. I tried the tech about grinding my wide whites. Took me all day but turned out pretty good' and hey, it's free! I'll try to get a fresh pic up tomorrow nite if anybody cares.
Wow man that looks really nice! Can't sell it and get an uglier(cheaper) car to chop? I know you didn't ask, but I won't let that stop me from suggesting you get the fuel filler door patched over since yer gettin it chopped That car is damn nice! Good score!
My guess is cheap. A friend of mine spent 8500+ on getting his top chopped with front and rear glass (swapped the rear glass for a window and frame from another car, can't remember what). The total was around 10k with side glass (with vent windows)and door/hood shaved, and primered, no other body work done. Oh, and it took at least 6 months, but prolly more like 8, I can't remember. It was done at a name shop, great work. This is in Los Angeles.
Cheap. I should say inexpensive as I've seen his work on here and figured he was one of those guys for people who make an assload of cash. It makes me think about saving my cash for a bit and having something out of this world...
Thanks all, for the input. I've had a couple Pms offering chops, one suggested doing a hardtop cause the 1/4 windows look too small when choppin' a coupe. What do ya think? I waited to find a coupe, now I'm not sure. Here's a new pic after a weekends work, removed the Coronado kit, ground the whitewalls( Thanks to Bugman's video) lowering the front 3"(torch) and adding Desota caps (thanks KIRK!)
Its looking good, I have always had a thing for 50 fords. Hardtops have made out of 50 fords, and they do have a look. But also there is a look to a 50 if you leave the posts or if you lean them forward. I will try and find some examples.
I'd roll it just like that for a while... the paint and body looks OK and now that you ditched the continintal kit it's real cool.
Kenny Baker (Choprods) hands down your man. I had Kenny chop my '40 Chevy, and he stretched my dads 49 Chevy 5 window pickup though the doors. Kenny is super standup, and does awesome work. He'll even treat you to lunch at the Elmer Diner when you're there. You should also talk to him about glass. He has a glass guy and with all yours being flat should be realllllly reasonable.
Since this pic, I've lower 3 inches in front and 1 in back anf lost the Coronado kit. Nothing you will do to this will improve the looks more than losing the kit!!! LOL. A friend is an old body man. when he chopped shoeboxes, he tilted the rear window forward so it fit without cutting. Not sure how he did it, but it looked good. Good luck, & be sure to let us know how it turned out. (with pics.).......jj ...................................... No guts,...No glory...........Too much guts.....No more guts [/quote]
If you want it done right, quickly and economicly....You should PM Choprods or call him at this shop in Elmer and see if can fit you in...He gets booked up in the winter so don't wait....He chopped my 41 panel and it's badass!...You won't find anyone better for the money...or otherwise...He's the best!
Choprods can definately make it look good i hang out at his shop a lot and he does amazing work....Greg
Greg- I like how you use the term "hang out" so loosely. For all that dont know Greg is Kenny's right hand man. Works several days a week learning the trade.
I 2nd that! Man that is one nice sancturary....and if mine looked like that, even my wife wouldn't be so bitchy.
Mine's that clean, once a year. No wait, it's been 2.....no 3 years. Shoulda took a picture! Seriously, why can't I keep it clean? I really want to!
About 4" out of the roof vertical, instead of 4" front and 5" rear. I believe it tricks the eye into thinking it's longer. Lined up by the A pillars. B pillars laid forward to match, rear window laid down to match. Good looking car, one of my personal favorites.
It is a difficult chop to pull of right, done wrong it looks to pancake like, here's one of the side of mine that I think came out pretty well...
Nice car. Lots of replys as far as what you should do, but I know a guy who knew somebody that wanted a chopped car and he thought I should caution you.I think alot has to do with the factory options.Do you want to end up with a custom or a lowrider? I'm afraid if you chop it to much the rocker panels will drag. Also alot depends on the interior color. Best of luck. Hope this helps. You better check with Wis. DOT ,I think you can only have air shocks on car49 or older.
