Hot Rods Let's have our own 84th anniversary event for the 40 ford...

In post #7237 there is a beautiful blue '39 Deluxe coupe. I have a question about the wheels/hubcaps. It looks like the car has wide 5 wheels that have been chromed, but the caps appear to be late '40s Mercury. Are the caps attached to the original wide 5 caps or is there something else happening? The car has such a nice clean look.

 

I believe there is something else happening here..... Looks like mine which are aftermarket wheels (mine have Ford 4 1/2" and Chevy 4 3/4" 5 lug bolt patterns) with aftermarket hubcaps that resemble the stock '40 hubcap. 40 didn't have the wide 5 that I know of, suppose it's possible early production may have had a few that way. I'll take a picture of mine today and post it here.

The outer spoked chrome part is an accessory tin that snaps over the stock painted wheel. They are called spider caps. Might have even been a Ford-supplied accessory. I'm not sure what center caps are on that car, but they seem to be the right diameter for the wide five wheels. They just have a big dish. Maybe something Canadian, or aftermarket, or accessory.
