Phillips screws are obviously the correct choice for Automotive use and I have them all over my RPU and haven’t had any issues with them up to now. The truth of the matter is that the Phillips style screw is a flawed design actually junk if you want to know the truth and they’re far too easy to strip either tightening or trying to remove them. The square drive Robertson screw is a superior design. So what if Henry Ford wasn’t smart enough to realize that. Even the Japanese have come up with a superior version of the Phillips screw design called JIS and if you have ever wrecked some screws that look like Phillips screws on a Japanese car or motorcycle by grabbing your trusty Phillips screwdriver now you know why. The Japanese Industrial Standard looks similar but has different sized contacts and angles to improve the typical weaknesses of the Phillips design and as a result you need JIS screwdrivers to do the job right.
The tool to fastener issues with Phillips head screws were largely eliminated with the introduction of the Pozi- drive design. Mixing the two however, can result in problems. As far as Japanese cars and motorcycles, I am in a position where I do not have to repair, work on , or even have them on my property. I shed no tears when it's time for them to go to that big rice paddy in the sky. Correction: I had earlier incorrectly stated that Ford wouldn't pay royalties for their use. Henry tried to buy the exclusive right to manufacture and use them and Robertson declined. Today all "square'' screws are made in jiaxing ,china
Mr. Robertson had some bad experiences in England with licensing his screws, so afterwards he insisted on retaining control of making them, refusing to license the manufacture to Mr. Ford. Once bit, twice shy.
Not updated this In a while! I’ve put some miles on it this year and have enjoyed every second! Blew up a rear end a few days before Trog (wildwood) and had a mad rush swapping out another rear end the evening before the 15 hour drive. As we all know Trog got canceled and I blew up my new to me rear end almost instantly in our hotel parking lot! I did snap one pic on the beach though so all was not lost.. I’ve built up a good rear end out of all my junk and it’s now driving great. Here’s a few recent snaps
Thanks for the update @Joebrownvw good to hear you have been able to enjoy your car after a couple of setbacks, it's a cool thing!
Oh & out of interest what size shoes are on your S/Coupe also what is the recipe for lowering it?? It sits so nice!
Joe you drove your Coupe all the way down there? @Outback shared a pic in another SC Tread and I thought it looked familiar...looks really sharp and glad it's giving you some good times despite some burps...
Nice car. I have the shot with the roller coaster in the background saved on my hard drive. Way to go, enjoy. Ps- love the name.
