Technical '51 Henry J six cylinder

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by alphabet soup, Dec 20, 2022.

  1. I don't know if this is the right place to ask this, but I feel sure someone will tell me if not.
I have a buddy working on a six cylinder from a customers '51 Henry J. He can't find new pistons for it at any of his suppliers. He also checked Egge and some Willys place up north, nothing. Anyone have any suggestions?? Thanks, Gene.

The six is a Continental, I believe. I don't know if this helps.

    Henry J help needed.:)

  5. Yup, Kaiser used Continental engines- I'm surprised Egge doesn't have them

Look at Rock auto. Breaker points are listed for the 53 Henry J, but not the 51.

The same points are listed for the same continental engine used in some 1951 Jeep applications though. I suspect not listing them for a 51 Henry J is simply a catalog error.

  8. Not sure what the problem finding them is? But maybe the bore size. I think he said it's 3 1/8". Gene.

    Look into Kanter maybe?
As a side note, I know I’ve read posts that mention places that would make pistons for people that were not shelf items. I don’t recall names, just recall it being said.

Edit, because Continental was mentioned a quick Google show Silvolite has 3.125 bore pistons for a Continental 4 cyl engine. No idea if pin height would be correct, etc.

It’s early here and I’m reading in the dark, without gl***es.

Rebuilders choice and Kanter list the pistons, per Google

  11. If it’s a continental engine check with heavy equipment and forklift companies as the conti was used for years in that industry .

pistons might be lower compression for running propane , not sure

    But another possible avenue

If that is the F226 continental engine I had one in a Oliver-Cletrac crawler
As stated was popular in agriculture and industrial applications

Henry Js didn't use the 226 Continental six; they used the 161 cubic inch six that Darrins also had.

  15. Both F-heads and flathead-sixes were in Willys products. Overhauled an F-head 161 c.i. when I was 15. Ran like a top afterward.

Lincoln Welders also used Continental 4 and 6 cylinders, there are some outfits that refurbish old welders, maybe check that out.
