Having spent considerable time in the stickies section, I hope I won't get flamed for asking. The only vendor that I have been able to find for a front disc brake kit of a '56 Merc running stock 5 on 5 rims is this from Jamco https://www.jamcosuspension.com/pro...front-disc-brake-conversion-kit-5x5-dbk5456mc Any help for other possibilities would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Paul 2748. Sadly ECI doesn't handle anything for a 5 on 5 bolt circle wheel. I wish to retain the stock rims.
Maybe I am misunderstanding something here. The JAMCO KIT allows you to keep the MERC spindles and hubs. The only problem I see is it uses GM style calipers and both they and the rotors will be CHI-COM. If the calipers are metric, they will require a quick take-up MC. Be sure to ask.
Thanks Kultulz, I was hoping for insight in addition to alternatives. I would ask for an explanation of quick take up master cylinder.
There were a lot of cars that used the 5 on 5 pattern check what is listed here: https://www.roadkillcustoms.com/whe...5x5-wheel-bolt-pattern-5x127mm-5x5.00-inches/ maybe the solution is using a rotor from one of these with a GM caliper ? Speedway may have just the brackets, give them a call for advice they have been at this for almost six decades. https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Sear...r%20Brackets*GA_Nav_Subcategory:Disc%20Brakes
Retaining stock rims with calipers I'm guessing probably won't happen, but my statement is based on '57 Fords.
Kit includes: - 11" High Quality Finished Standard Rotors 5 x 5" bolt pattern - Low Profile Calipers w/brake pads - Mounting Brackets - Bearings - Seals - Dust caps - Spindle nuts - Rubber Brake Hoses - All necessary hardware - Limited Lifetime Warranty *Works with most 15" wheels. *Please note that this kit has a wheel offset of +.50" per side (moves wheels out 1/2" per side) 1956 MERC OEM wheel was 15x5.5. I would contact JAMCO directly and ask about the OEM WHEELS fitting over the calipers. Their being GM SGL PISTON, they should be not be as large as the KH 4-PISTON CALIPER HOUSINGS. If so, it may take a set of wheel spacers and/or caliper housing slight grinding.
I was able to keep stock rims when I did the Granada disc conversion. The only thing needed was the hub pilot diameter needed to be turned down a bit.
The rotor/hub ***y in the kit is 5 X 5. The hub has been chosen to be able to mount on the MERC spindle. Usually, donor parts are GM or most likely off-shore copies of GM. The kit is a bolt-on. I wonder if the kit price is what has him hesitant? Ain't going to be a lot of choices for an early MERC using the OEM spindle.
