Hi all, I'm trying to cure a noisy lifter situation at start up, on my 341" Desoto powered Deuce. I suspect worn lifter bores - one or more. I realize the ultimate solution is a tear down and lifter bore bush, but would like to try a couple- or more- .001 oversize diameter lifters if I can find any. I am currently using 440 Mopar lifters and adjustable pushrods - due to a cam grind- with larger diameter lower ball ends to mate with these lifters. Mopar used to market .001 oversize at one time. Does anyone have any they would part with, know an accurate part number, or know a supplier? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Don Harrington, Ontario Canada. 905-957-3489 harringtond48@hotmail.com

  2. If I remember correctly, the oversized Molar lifters were .020 oversize to correct factory defective blocks. How much preload are you running on your lifters?

My experience is worn lifter bores manifests as low oil pressure. Are we discussing hydraulic lifters here?

It’s been a long time but I think it’s the Ford FE lifter bore size that is used to clean up the mopar. I’ve heard it both ways, mopar had a batch of blocks with lifter bores oversized and they first got a few thousand sets of lifter’s that were over size then there’s another story where Chrysler would fit individually lifters in lifter boars On each engine, yea right.

You're like me, old iron. Going back into the memory banks is likely to get some seriously bad intel. The FE lifter is only .874" and the Mopars have always been .904".

Maybe it’s 429? Sometimes I think I’ve forgot on more than I ever knew. Lol

There are several lifters with appropriate diameters but it appears that the 'wrong' lifter is currently being used.
with larger diameter lower ball ends to mate with these lifters
This tells me that the 440 lifter being used is 68-up and certainly will place the oil feed groove in a less-than-desirable position with regards to the window in the bore. This is the same issue as using the HT2011 LA lifter, yeah they work, kinda... If the lifter does not see the window long enough then oil supply will suffer.
The proper lifters, VL-8, or HT812, are available so why not use them?
CAUTION: Comp Cams 812 lifter is for a sbc...not useful.

Nope, 429-460's are .875" just like nearly all mid 1960's and later Ford V8's.
