I'm trying to install a Vintiques trunk latch kit. The insert in the lid does not accept the size of the latch ***embly. The shaft on the original handle is too short to fit through the latch ***embly and bolt on. The hole on the latch does not line up to center with the hole on the lid.
Is the a way to mount the handle that is different from using the parts I have in the pic.
See pics that should explain what I described.

And the the latch part that the lever goes into hits the lid .

    Thanks photoMA31771857-0004.JPG photoMA31771859-0003.JPG photoMA31771861-0002.JPG photoMA31771863-0001.JPG photoMA31771857-0004.JPG photoMA31771859-0003.JPG photoMA31771861-0002.JPG photoMA31771857-0004.JPG photoMA31771859-0003.JPG photoMA31771861-0002.JPG photoMA31771863-0001.JPG

welcome to the world of repro' parts. you could try another supplier or make it fit. open the hole up, relieve the recess that the latch fits in and weld it up. put the bend on the catch in a different spot.
i rarely find a repro' part that goes "right in".

I used the repop handle latch and catch. I had to grind cut to fit. It stays closed. Viberates while driving and has to be turned back to lock. The lock in the repop handle has already failed! Vintique brand. They all look alike.

You pre-fit everything before you painted the car, right? :(

A couple things: Looks like your decklid wasn't ever cut for a trunk latch, so it may require some t******* to fit. Is it original or Brookville? Hopefully somebody here will be able to show you a good pic of the original decklid latch area.

And, for some reason, I've found Vintique stuff to require more "fitting" than other brands. On most everything they sell. So I stay away from their parts and go to Drake or Carpenter. But beware, as everybody is cross-selling more and more these days. Call your vendor and ask who made the parts first.

I totally agree with the post above..if I can't find the original piece I generally stay away from Vintique parts.

working with what you have you will probably have to do some grinding and cutting and make it fit, HRP

You have to drop the latch thru the hole in the inner liner and put the screws into the latch from the outside. It appears that the shaft on your handle may be cut to short? It should be long enough to accept a nut and washer inside the lid through the latch. There is also a rubber grommet that goes between the handle base and the lid.

Here is a picture of how the latch should be installed. The latch is mounted inside of the trunk lid. It looks like you're going to have to cut a hole in your trunk lid. 2 screws hold it in place. With the latch inserted in the new opening the handle shaft will probably be long enough. Also pictured is the bracket that the latch is hooked to. Hope this helps.

I bought a '32 Vint(junk) trunk handle, and dont have the nerve to try to resell it. I did find a NOS 37 V8 trunk handle that I really like instead.

If you install it just like the pic above, and you know it's right in the lid and you can't latch it, the striker that bolts in may need some bending to reach the latch properly. It's blind in there so you can't figure out how much you need and where it's at. To remedy this, get some Playdough, or modeling clay, and put a lump of it where the striker is supposed to be. Shut the trunk, turn the latch, open the trunk back up, and it will show you exactly where it needs to be!

Wife, or girlfriend in the trunk with a flashlight should be better than modeling clay. Bob

A couple problems with that. 1st, that's a good way to piss off the wife! 2nd, you can't see the striker because it's down in the channel where you can't see it!

It should be maybe installed turned 180 degrees like on this photo but how do you place this inside of the trunk lid. Not sure which way it's correct....
I have modified striker plate and it's ok now but it should be installed out of center and it depends on latch ...left from center or right...

i have found some pdf instruction it might help:http://www.plucks329s.org/pdf/studies/TRUNK_INSTRUCTIONS_ PART_1A.pdf

Interesting, mine is messed up too. I have about a 1/4" of spacers between the latch and the body.
