Hi all. I am working on a 39 Chevy Master 85 2 door sedan with rear roll down side windows. I bought the car in boxes. Does anyone have experience with sedan rear side window install. The glass is in the the body but no nothing to hold it when rolled up. I have to think my parts are there just not sure how it goes together. I do have the garnish for sure. Also, I have heard of installing and making them stationary…not sure I want to go that route but curious if any one has and liked it. I posted a similar post on the Vintage Chevrolet site (VCCA) and no responses. Thanks in advance! Jeff
Search internet for, " invisible pontiac". Its a pontiac and 4dr but GM, rear door glass probly same. I hav used pics for reference on my 39 Master. Good luck, Doug
Here is a link from 2yrs ago on the VCCA site, with information regarding the same procedure on a '38. Hope it helps...not sure that it covers interior / window issues, though.. Chevrolet's 1938 Shop Manual (oldcarmanualproject.com)
A copy of a '39 Shop manual will give you all the answers, plus good pictures of the mechanisms to let you compare and see if you have everything. They're all over the internet for sale, plus many copies cheap on Ebay.
Thanks. The oldcarmanualproject.com site has the 39 as well. It isn't super descriptive, but probably adequate. I will have to see if I can find a hard copy version to see if it has more detail. I appreciate the help!
Go to the old car manual site you have linked to and look at the 39-40 Fisher Body manual. Figure #413 shows a breakdown of the quarter windows. Do your windows have the metal channel on the bottom? The rollers on the arms of the window crank mechanism go into the channels on bottom of window and that's what holds window up. http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/fisher/1939_40/index.htm http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/fisher/1939_40/39fbsm128.htm
The old car manuals images are less than perfect pictures. But my reprint of the '39 manual has much sharper pictures of the parts and drawings. But there are two manuals for these old Chevys, and one is the "shop manual" while the other is the "Fisher body manual". The Fisher Body manual is a better source of how to install, adjust, or make repairs of things like glass and door mechanisms. I have both manuals as reprints for my '39 and I used the Fisher manual more for details.
