So it’s time to retire the tired 305 in my ride. I bought a 51k mile RV and got the 454 and 400 out of it and it has the rear mounted e-brake on it. I was planning on just using the motor but I think I will use them both. Did some research on removing the drum brake ***embly but didn’t find anyone thinking like me so I came to the experts. I kept the slip yolk and driveshaft setup and plan to use it as it was designed. My question is what holds the fluid in the ******? Can I just torch around the backing plate for the drum and run it like it was designed? Remove all the brake parts and use the bolt on yolk? Thanks in advance for your replies.
I swapped the tail housing with a regular th400. Those th475s are cool. Straight cut gears. Should sound cool cruising I have one and a th400. I bought a Doug Nash overdrive for a 400. I test fit it to the th475 and it bolted right up. It has my old tail housing from the 400 on it now while it waits to be used
IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY, you will have to change the tailshaft and back shaft in the trans itself. I know on the 727 torqueflites you have to change both when swapping from motorhome to p***enger vehicles. If you don't you will have to keep the slip joint in the driveshaft itself instead of the yoke in the rear of the trans. .
Thanks squirrel, I read that post a few times the other day. My tag was all wadded up from being ripped out of the motor home but I flattened it out and it is the 475. my question is can I cut around my backing plate to use it and I ***ume there is a seal in there to retain the fluid. Remove all the drum ***embly and bolt my yoke back on, and use the slip yoke in the driveshaft.
You can cut up the brake if you really want to, I suppose. Or like he suggested, you can remove it, and put the yoke back on. Make sure it has park, or that you have a good parking brake, though.
