    upload_2022-12-17_4-41-37.png Boyle Heights locals

    Hello,

Our family history includes being in Boyle Heights in various times of our lives. There are/were many friends that lived there in the early days of our family’s So Cal experiences. We stayed at some friends’ houses for a few days prior to moving to more permanent living arrangements.

The community was close to downtown Los Angeles and was an easy commute to get to the Grand Central Market and the little shops in that general Alameda Corridor.

There were also other generations of families living in the Boyle Heights Area and it was one big area for families and relatives.

    Jnaki

In the artwork posted, here is the story that goes along with the art… It, along with others make the community colorful to say the least. But the art is pretty detailed and cool.

“Both Botello and Healy are featured in the same car they painted at the Shell Station. Botello is in the front seat throwing the peace sign. Healy is in the back seat throwing the Chicano fist. The car is heading West as that is where the gentrification is or appears to be happening most in Boyle Heights. The ***le of the mural is Orale! Let’s Cruise on Over to Progression, Aye!”

GILBERT "MAGU" LUJAN ART from So Cal

    Hello,

From the artworks of Gilbert Magu Lujan at a show in Orange County. The art includes excerpts from various items that are usually ***ociated with So Cal. A lowered Chevy, cool flames, and a long rear skirt for style. a scene from any time period in the L. A. basin...

What is more in the holiday spirit than a typical array of tall palm trees made famous all over the world by those numerous Hollywood TV shows and movies? Those tall palm trees were originally from Mexico and the fan palms are always ***ociated with some girl in a convertible driving down the palm lined streets of Los Angeles.

    upload_2022-12-24_4-54-31.png
So, what do So Cal locals do to be a little different, but yet celebrate the season? They decorate their palm trees still planted in the ground around their houses or in the sidewalk curbside gr*** strips. Some just get the closest thing and use it for decorations. But, in some communities, it is all out bright lights and action…
upload_2022-12-24_4-58-5.png Some homes and communities go a little overboard, “to make the season bright…”
    upload_2022-12-24_4-58-46.png

Yes, we have our requisite green lights and white lights ready when the season comes along and we are not dead to the world... Our small Robellini Palm Trees are relatives of the the palm tree large family and they do their share of landscaping our small house and yard.

Happy Holidays wherever you are located and whatever style you have on your decoration choices.

A young boy’s room for inspiration… Lisa Kelly, Artist...

    Hello,

We all have our thoughts about giving our children the opportunity to make something of themselves without too much interference by the parents. There are limits as to what is put out there for the kid(s) to absorb and make their own choices.

For some, living a specific lifestyle of hot rods, customs and specific builds could lead to a young family member to continue work in the same field. Then again, he/she may feel as if there was no choice in the matter and that they had to be there during the builds and parts shopping. The culture was surrounding them… so there may be a backlash.

On the other hand, leaving the choice to a young kid is a choice we all like to have, to be individual and make the choices geared to interests and ideals. Sometimes, it works if the motivation is there and the young kid(s) are independent with their choices. Other times, it is a lost cause, if they latch on to something, despite what we as parents see as …not their choices.

    Jnaki

Providing the opportunity with books, magazines, road trips, a stable family life will offer most of the road to good selections down the way. Our dad liked hot rods and cool cars, plus throwing in some outdoor activities for the two young sons must have had an influence. We liked being outside and when it was time to explore, tearing down anything mechanical was a fun activity. Camping and fishing was a natural progression that we took to instantly.

But, we also loved reading everything we could get our hands on from comic books to Life Magazines, with a few hot rod/custom car magazines when we could buy them. So, there is that result.

It those art murals were available to us, we probably would have turned into the So Cal beach lifestyle for our continued lives. Oh, we did that lifestyle without having any murals for inspiration, so there is that puzzling result, too. A woody at the beach would make anyone like that low key scene... Although, the wave looks like Newport Beach on a huge Summer swell day with the shorebreak walloping the steep sandy berm...YRMV

    Art by Ramona Califas

    Hello,

One day I was scrolling through some old artwork I had seen before. Then the whole ***le popped up:
“Explainin’ the Scene…” The art is rather detailed and looks like my old college art notebook from 1965.

But, this artwork is more detailed and looks rather cool. For some, explaining the hot rod scene is a project that takes some time to showcase what you see as hot rod art or designs different from the others. The art showcases a popular destination to those that, perhaps had never seen a drive-in theater or a hot rod showcase on Friday-Saturday nights in So Cal, back in the late 50s- early 60s.

    Jnaki

One day, I had to explain a lowered rake hot rod with mild scallops on it to a newcomer to the scene. It was fun as I highlighted what I thought would be a simple explanation of the design and build. But, without going overboard on every detail, I pointed out the obvious differences. Simple and trying to make the new person interested in the hot rod world of cool builds. YRMV
