The view from the Balboa Fun Zone toward the famous Balboa Ferry entrance for the fun Bay/harbor crossing.
Bill Drysdale, Artist, Balboa Island Peninsula Fun Zone

    Hello,

We tried to go to the Balboa Fun Zone on our weekly cruise to the beach. There was a jam up in the little town of Balboa and so, we turned around to go another way. Well, the traffic heading North from Balboa on PCH, was to allow us another entrance to the Balboa Peninsula. A sneaker Southern Hemisphere swell came pounding the shoreline and the waves were getting larger. Usually, it is during the Summer months and perhaps a early fall swell run, but this was in late fall almost early Winter.

So, our trip had to take another route home. Yes, a nice coastal drive down PCH through Laguna Beach and Dana Point. One travel writer once wrote that the coastal drive from Corona Del Mar to San Clemente was better that the coastal drives in most European coastal shorelines. And… it is right in So Cal!!!

    Jnaki

So, we had our nice station wagon, the sun was out, the ocean was shades of blue and the matching sky was clear blue open to the horizon. So, what was better than that alternate route? Since it was before the lunch hour, the 101 Coast Highway was relatively empty and the narrow streets of Laguna Beach was a fast drive past all of the distractions.

What is the draw of the Balboa Fun Zone area? The TV shows “The OC” and “Arrested Development” both showcased the area and just made it look attractive. So, the beach draws folks from all over and across the Fun Zone area is the remnants of the historic “Rendevous Ballroom.” ( The “Surfers Stomp” dance moves during the cruising era and hot spot memories…Ha !)

Sailing in the crowded harbor and dodging the Balboa Ferry was one of those things we all had to endure and plan a course around the impending crossing. Normally, power boats give up the right of way in a crossing to sailboats, but the slow Balboa Ferry always had the right of way. When we were on it almost daily with our granddaughter, as a little toddler, it was a pure delight going slowly over the blue bay waters either way.

I bought this vintage photograph from a vendor at the Portland Swapmeet a number of years ago, and then forgot all about it. Shuffling through some of my stash this morning, it surfaced again. This was always one of my favorite roadsters. Credit to who ever shot this photograph back in 1950.

    Hello,

The Vista, CA Rod Run has been going on for many years. Back then, the city was known as “inland Oceanside” and was/is a short run from the Coast Highway or the fast I-5 Freeway North or South. But, it was the road trip to get to the site of the rod run that was enticing. From all points Los Angeles/Long Beach to the North (And inland OC) was one of the coolest drives down the Coast Highway through Orange County to get past Camp Pendleton and enter the Oceanside, CA. turn off towards Vista, CA.

We were quite familiar with this coastal drive as we took it many times on our way South from our Long Beach house on our Southern surf journey adventures. But, as we approached Oceanside, Vista was inland and not one of our stops in the San Diego area surf spots.

    Jnaki

Many years later, we had some friends that lived in Vista and the road trip for visits was always filled with the ambience of the coastal ocean view drive South and North, back home. These days, it is a short cut from the far inland locations back to the coast without having to drive on the dangerous Highway 74.

    NOTE:

As a road trip worthy point of view, if anyone is in the area for visits or trying to get back to the coast from the inland vacation spots, here is a plan. From the Palm Springs, Mt. San Jacinto Areas, Southern desert areas, etc, Vista is on the northern end of a Highway 76 that provides a much faster way to drive to the coast than to fight the traffic in the inland freeways and toll roads. From the Southern deserts, it is an alternative route that is not the most busy road and is a pleasant drive through the backwoods areas to the coast at Oceanside.

“This very cool mural in downtown Vista can be found at the parking lot near the intersection of Main Street and Michigan Avenue. It depicts cl***ic cars and hot rods along Historic U.S. Route 395, and pays tribute to the Vista Rod Run!"

"The Vista Rod Run is a popular car show that has over 3 decades of history."

"The nostalgic artwork was designed by Kait Matthews in 2014, and painted by Raziah Roushan, Phyllis Swanson and Cynthia Kostylo.”
    upload_2023-1-21_8-27-46.png

See it now, before it peels away…

Vista, CA just inland from the city of Oceanside, CA and the Camp Pendleton entrance location...

One of the great elements of the "SAS" Saturday Art Show is, the great variety of art and prints that show up here, its truly a joy to participate each Saturday.
I have this great book called, "THE OPEN ROAD" and it has some very unique, large format photographs that are perfect to post here.
If any of you ever see this book, on a table at swap-meets, pick it up, you wont be disappointed. I think I paid $8.00 for my copy.
Its hard bound and the printing is very good.
    Thanks from Dennis.

    Happy Saturday "SAS"
That is a lot of time and patience it took, to do all of that swirl pattern engine turning to the skin of this one of a kind machine.

“THE CAR LOT” Gilbert Magu Lujan

    Hello,

Growing up as car nuts since little kids, we have seen our share of car lots, used and new. The local Long Beach sales center of auto dealers was a few blocks from our old high school. We used to all walk around the dealers during the September-October months for the latest new cars that showed up in the showrooms.

Sometimes, we would see moms and dads poking around the new cars in the showrooms and the sales guys giving them more attention than to us. He probably knew the “older” folks had money to spend… But, at least we were interested in the new models. Who knew, perhaps, they saw a young kid spending a lot of time looking at a 1958 black Impala during the fall of 1957 season.

Or, and slightly older 20 something guy looking at some El Camino models, with lust in his eyes about the custom factory options that should be on the "next" car.

    Jnaki

So Cal artist Gilbert “Magu” Lujan it the nail on the head with his art depiction of a new/used car lot at any time of the year for shoppers…

Drag News cover art Chuck Jones January 1959

    Hello,

Chuck Jones was involved in art, mechanics, design hot rodding, drag racing, and writing during this early drag race time period. We were always impressed with the early Sidewinder from their camp through Joe Mailliard’s Garage/Speed Shop near our house in the Westside of Long Beach. His artwork was the best capture of any drag racing or hot rods. Being on the cover of the nationally distributed Drag News weekly paper was really something.

From the beginning of the year, we kept seeing results from the Chrisman Garage Race Cars. The white one with the cool brown/bronze scallops was great looking as a compe***ion car. We followed the exploits from January to December in the weekly newspapers. Then, along comes the biggest drag race event on the Westcoast, just two hours from our Long Beach house during the last week in December. It was one that was not to be missed.

    Jnaki

So, we had to go see all of the biggest names in drag racing from all over the USA coming to So Cal. Garlits, Karamesines, Langley, Speed Sport Special, Chrisman, Ivo, etc. all in one drag race meet.

Chuck Jones’ art work coming to life, right in front of us in December of 1959. Yowza!

    Hello,

With a fabulous finished wall garage and custom flooring, what a better place to park your hot rods or custom cars with a mural to top off the ambience of automotive themed work/play place. Lisa Kelly is well known for her mural art. The topics range from oceans, scenes, to old cars.

Granted, not all garages look like this one, but to drive in daily and then be able to go out to work on your cars in a clean well designed room is at the top level. Everything in its place, stored out of the way of the current project or daily driver. No junky open shelves with stuff hanging all over the place. It is a room as part of the whole house and something to be enjoyed while doing some work on cars... YRMV

    Hello,

I have always admired the artwork of Keith Weesner. His artwork is impressive. The 6 Strombergs are like old home week with the set up looking good on a supercharged SBC motor. The idea for us came from the original idea my brother had of a Model A street hot rod in 1959. But, ended up in a different way.
    upload_2023-2-18_5-32-31.png
Despite the fact that we never saw a modified RPU with a single fin surfboard at any of the surf spots, ever, I liked the idea of the two custom builds in one nicely done art work. Maybe, three…
    upload_2023-2-18_5-33-9.png
So, when I typed in Model A hot rod Keith Weesner, these are some of the things that popped up.

    Jnaki

But, when I typed in 1930 Model A Hot Rod in “AI” this is what I got:
    upload_2023-2-18_5-34-23.png
A.I. interpretation of a 1930 Model A hot rod: Dream From Wombo site 30 seconds to show up.

    upload_2023-2-18_5-35-20.png
Craiyon.com version of 1930 Model A Hot Rod one minute to show up.

    upload_2023-2-18_5-36-35.png
    Stablediffusionweb.com 1 minute 30 sec to show up… 1930 Model A hot rod

It was a crazy combo of what someone typed in 1’s and 0’s in the computer lingo to come up with a combination of photos and wild modifications. Frankenstein end results for sure. Not my bag of tea… or "A's" in this case... YRMV
