This looks like Tom McMullin’s deuce roadster in a livery I’ve not seen before, before the iconic black and flames. Never knew it was green.

  2. hotrodA, it was painted green metalflake, when metalflake was new. I heard it didn't come out very good, and was removed soon after.

I thinking the extra hoop was added to meet a new minimum height requirement.

Prior to overhead rollbars, The Carrillo Roadster had a duck under rollbar. In the picture is HAMBer Frank Morawski checking out the duck under rollbar as well as the center mass heart Impaler steering column. The car shows as built in 1948 frank.jpg

  9. I spoke with guys that drove roadsters and midgets back in the day with the form fitting rollbars that were about 2" off the body work. They hoped for snap rolls rather than lazy barrel rolls. If they had any room they slid down in the seat and kinda ducked and covered. Steering wheels were better than seat belts at holding you in and they were more afraid of fire than rollovers.

  11. Fire still scares me, the idea of being trapped in a burning car is terrifying, and these modern cars are closed up I am shocked no one has burned to death!

I remember reading an interview with David Pearson and he said one of his first race cars used the headboard of a steel bed frame as a roll bar. If I remember correctly, it fell on him during a race. A lot of these look like bedframes.

    Hello,

The Forsberg Brothers, Denny and Jerry, along with their friend John Middleton were involved in quite a few race cars. One was this very cool roadster the Forsberg Brothers built, raced it, and then sold to John Middleton. They raced it at their home court, Fremont Dragstrip in Northern California. Near the Westcoast GM factory where our red El Camino was made in 1964.
    upload_2023-1-17_2-55-6.png
The legal roll bar style/function did well for protection and design. The roadster had a great stance, did well for both the brothers and their friend in the competitive races.

One thing always helps, they worked at Vic Hubbard’s Speed Shop and were involved in the cars that came out of that shop.

The Forsberg Brothers went on to an Altered Roadster Bantam modified and then eventually, went to the Junior Fuel Class for FED race cars.

This cracks me up. It's not IF your gonna be upside down, it's WHEN. This just makes it easier to roll it back over.[IMG]

  22. That was a fairly common set up in eastern NY and VT as they would often run mixed fields of roadsters and stock cars

Some give new meaning to roll bars, sorta like combination racing & amusement ride.

For some reason drivers were convinced they could be able to bend over at the waist and hold themselves low enough to be safe. Of course that was nonsense and soon disallowed. The same thing for arm restraints which were first added to rule book in the late 70’s.

Yeah you were racing Chevies with 210 on their hoods. This was after the multi carb ban in March/April 1956.
