I used 8 grand am seats in my 35 with a center console. They are very comfortable and you can pull off the headrests to make low back seats.

  7. Early van seats (late 60's-early 70's) will work but are harder and harder to find.

I would really look at 80's small pickups. you said you want a split bench. 80's small trucks still had bench seats and many were regular cab so you have a fold down seat without integrated seat belts and without a lot of bolstering that doesnt look traditional, most are narrow enough for rods. the 3rd row seats usually dont have sliders. you could do a split rear 3rd row and mount them offset. small trucks will have notch for trans tunnel and shifter clearance and 80-90's truck parts are cheap.
If youre trying to use existing upholstery go newer with leather but it will look less traditional with the upholstery design. van seats may be a decent bet as someone mentioned, you may get a slider but the seats are bulky/thick and usually have armrests / seat belts integrated.

I just scored a beautiful buckskin, pleated, perforated leather seat for the Diamond T project at my buddys salvage yard. It's a rear seat from some GM mid sized SUV, with folding center armrest, cupholders (uh oh, not HAMB friendly!) and all. WAY more comfortable than the original, coil spring, toadstool like seat, and it was FREE!!!! Still smells like new leather too!

I really think scrounging a van third seat or SUV back seat will get you something inexpensive and comfy.

These are the "way back" seats from a Lumina APV mini-van. They fit well in small spaces but the seat cushion is supported by a nylon mesh that doesn't last with an adult's weight. Later FWD GM mini-vans have the cushion in a steel pan and work out well. Headrests remove, no bolsters that don't look right, they latch into the van floor so "no tool" removal from the donor and sometimes you can find a highend one that has leather.

Usually never an issue if the passenger is shorter than the driver when using a bench seat. It just gives the passenger more leg room. If the driver is the smaller it can result in the passenger being cramped. But that's a rare situation most of the time.

I used high back Fiero seats. Speakers nicely hidden in the headrests. Leather upholstery kits available online. Car is a '31 A chopped 2.5". The interior's black and the car is green now. Hot rod seats.JPG

    Hello,

When we started our 1940 Willys Coupe build with the SBC motor, we had already known of a small sporty car seats that were in a friend’s little MGA. The little sporty car was a frequent visitor to our house on the Westside of Long Beach. But, with the measurements, the seats from the MGA would fit nicely. The only problem was that the ones we saw were in pretty good condition or one was good, whereas the other matching seat from the pair was not.

So, we kept looking at all of the zillion scrapyards near our house and into the city of Wilmington, near Lion’s Dragstrip. It that wasn’t enough, then a few miles away on Main Street in South Central Los Angeles had plenty of other scrapyard on both sides of the street.

The measurement of the sporty car seat was used, but our seats came out of another sporty car. Possibly a Triumph. They fit in the Willys Coupe, but with the floor/firewall modifications for a legal set back of 10%, we had to move the seats back as far as it would go in the interior space. The frame was too high, so we had to modify the metal brackets to make the small bucket seats lower and farther back.

Once it was done, we had room for two big teenagers, the modified floorboard/firewall, and the inclusion of a 2.5 gallon Moon Tank and pump in front of the passenger seat. Between the seats was the small fire extinguisher in its bracket. There were no high back seats at the time, so most used the small sporty car seats to fit nicely inside the smaller hot rod interiors.

The USA factory seats were too wide, bulky, and expensive. (The oddball thing one of the guys in a scrapyard told us: There are more sporty car seats due to the fact that most sporty cars get in crazy accidents… So the more there are, the less they cost.)

It was a little cramped for the passenger (me) when we went for a test drive all around our hot rod cruising area in Bixby Knolls. It also gave us time to figure out how much driving we could do with the small Moon Gas Tank. With several stops to check the gas tank, we were able to go about 12 miles on a full tank. But, I was able to check the small tank while sitting in the passenger seat that also had to be pushed back as far as it would go in the cabin.

A pair of similar low back seats inside of a 1941 Willys Coupe seen at the Lion’s Dragstrip museum in 2017. Except our pair had black upholstery that looked rather nice in contrast to the aluminum floorboard.

saab-96-two-stroke-1964-white-wit-weiss-blanc-07-4832ea15.jpg The old Saab 96 and 99 seats come to mind. I've got a pair stashed away I plan on using.

64+ Mustang buckets for me (and many other A hot rods). There are plenty of options to recover them, too.

I used high back bass boat seats in my '28 Chevy fire truck street rod. Comfortable, water resistant, cheap. Just make up mounting brackets and go.
