I want to cut some regular gl*** and some gl*** mirrors. I basically know how but am chicken, need some encouragement.
I was in the picture framing business for more than 40 years along with my retail paint business and have cut thousands of regular gl***, and cheap mirror, plate gl*** & high quality mirror can be sketchy. when cutting gl*** use enough pressure to score the gl***, remember it's like cooking, your going to break some eggs. HRP
Yep, like said above, mark your cut lines, good smooth pressure with a good cutter that has a good wheel. Roll it against your palm to check for any flat spots.
Not as hard as everyone thinks. There are some good videos on Youtube that will get you started. My best tips.... Nice flat table with a soft covering (short pile carpet is good, or a thin blanket). Invest in a good quality cutter. It makes a m***ive difference. Get some free offcuts from your local gl*** shop and practice. Don't be afraid of breaking some gl***. There is plenty more in the world. Go for it......... Oh, and band-aids. If you cut enough gl*** you will need them (Glazier by trade)
I do a lot of stained gl*** work. A good cutter is crucial. A set of breaking pliers is also a big help. They have curved jaws that put pressure on each side of the score.
Thanks all. I did go to internet too, everyone says you gonna break ****. Yep, me in the past, So I rumaged around and found some s****e gl***, dug out my gl*** cutter right where I left it 17 years ago. Couldn't get it to score ****! Guess I need a new cutter!
Wife going on errands so I asked her to stop somewhere and get me a new gl*** cutter. Meanwhile I been practicing; I figured I just wasn't applying enough pressure. So I tried some more; more pressure was key but can only muster short runs. Don't snicker [can if you want] but I even tried a Carbide insert sharpened to fine point; it did work to some extent but mostly not..
Well.....It cannot be a difficult job......when I was 15 years old I cut all new gl*** from junkyard windows for my '40 Ford coupe.......sanded the cut edges with 150 grit paper.....If I could do it, it must be rather easy......
A buddy of mine used to say "man, she could cut gl*** with those things" when the shirts were tight and there was a chill in the air
Try it when your 74 and let me know how it goes. Had success after all, I went to the gl*** shop and had them cut me a piece of new stuff! Waiting for frame to dry, I will try not to break it.
Go for it. Then tell us all the pit falls you discovered. Or how successful you were (more likely than pit falls). You can do this my friend.
Sort of. I would more use the term "brittle". New gl*** is very much easier to cut than old gl***. Awww man, you chickened out........
When I was as young as you (guessing you are 74), I had no trouble cutting gl***......just needed a bit more patience....
""Awww man, you chickened out........"" Yeah, well some body told me I should pick my battles Thanks to all for input!!
