Looking at picking up a set of wheels from a fellow HAMB’er and wanting to get some of y’all’s thoughts on getting them from the Midwest out to Central California? LTL rates seems to be pretty atrocious and I’m sure just going to get worse. Any ideas would be appreciated.

  3. are they mounted? wrap them in cling wrap just add the label, if you want not scuff something add cardboard circles to the outside and rear. Then wrap them.
Check Freight sites or check in with one of the transporter that goes back and forth, I think there is a run going that way, look up Tnorwoodtransport_llc this guy is on IG. I would say your looking at about 100.00 a wheel/tire combo.

  4. Stuck a set of "A" wheels with tires on a pallet, and took to fastenall. But- the other party has to have a local store to send/deliver to them. You pay the tag up front, and they will deliver to your local store for pick up. Might investigate....

Four individually boxed or wrapped wheels will ship through UPS just fine, you can use PirateShip to get a discount on the label as long as you can print the label and drop it off at a UPS shipping point. Depending on distance, probably $75 per wheel. Not dirt cheap, but cheaper and easier than trying to ship them all together in one big stack.

Several years ago I bought some expensive polished knockoff kidney wheels with tires from a customer in CA. He shipped them to me in the same wooden crate I used to ship him a built Flathead motor. They came truck freight which was much cheaper 15 years ago.

Just last month I sent four 15x7 steel wheels, individually boxed @ 26 pounds each, from St Louis Mo to Grants Pass Organ. Fedex and UPS were about the same price at $56 each. I opened a Fedex account and printed off the shipping labels at home. I made my own double wall shipping box for each wheel. I used a taller box cut in half then slid down into the other half. Lots of tape.

  8. Where in the Midwest? Depending on where they are someone might be going to The Grand National Roadster show. They may haul them for you.

They’re located in Kansas if I recall. I’d have to double check.

  10. A few years ago I had a set of wheels and tires shipped from Missouri to Arizona using Fastenall - totally painless and the guys at the pickup point (in Scottsdale) even helped me bust down the boxes and loaded the items into my Mustang. The next day they were on my '31 A-V8:

Last I heard Fastenal isn't shipping west to east or east to west. I believe the Mississippi river is the dividing line but not positive. Best to check directly with Fastenal. If you do go with Fastenal, not all locations have forklifts. Important to know if you're shipping a pallet.

  12. I just did a quick peek on Google and it looks like the 'no-go' line is the Rocky Mountains. And it seems to follow zip codes, or county lines, not state lines. I didn't read all the fine print but I think you have to go online to this link........ https://www.fastenal.com/fast/blue-lane-freight ........ to see the map, get a quote, and pre-arrange shipping. They will tell you which store for dropoff and pickup at each end. It works well as long as the route stays within the East or the West Zone.

Probably from the wrong end (west shipping east) but prior to all the crisis in the country Phoenix So Cal (now Vintage Parts) shipped (5)) 15" (heavy) wide five Marmon Harrington type rims individually boxed to my doorstep they estimated no more than $30 per wheel, actually came in at $20 don't recall the carrier but they handled everything, might be worth getting suggestions from them.
