Picking away st it while it snows outside. 5C183105-DF9C-46A0-AA3A-C899581D9C83.jpeg realized the the flywheel won’t fit while
It’s on the stand so no stand runnjng Sunday but we’ll get it ready to bolt in all the same. Little look see mock up while I was cleaning for some sanity.

Sometimes I think half of my drive to get this car back together is just so I can clean and sort my shop. It’s been out of sorts all summer it’s driving me nuts.

E94A7ED0-7586-4317-A253-AEB1FD7F3156.jpeg made the last( ? ) parts run this morning and popped the rubber expansion plug into the pcv/road draft hole in the block at the recommendation of @porkn******

while I think it’s a cleaner set up than what I have I spent a lot of time/ money getting the current set up in place and removing it leaves with a big hole in the valve cover. So I’ll tag it and bag it and when there’s another early sbc in the shop I’ll have it on hand.

    picking away

Alright got the cam, lifters, push rods changed. Valves set, water pump and alternator brackets back on, intake and brackets mostly back on, distributor in, valve cover adapters on etc etc made good progress!

buying some more hardware tomorrow to replace worn out bits, and chase a few threads. Should be more or less ****oned up soon!

then onto finishing up the shock mounts.

Hopefully be cutting laps around the neighborhood before Christmas. Hopefully Santa brings me an awful lot of trans fluid lol.

This is hilarious... You sell me 2, 283 motors and I kept them around for years. All but 1 went to s**** because I couldn't sell 'em at the swap meets and I still have that one.....it's a '67- 195 hp motor. Been bored .040 and has a gigantic ridge but that's ok as I have a set of old DZ 302 camaro 4" pistons and some small journal Oliver rods.
My body guy gave me a 23 T touring [front half] and who knows. maybe I'll build a bucket T some day with your old 283.

Haha yeah I still have half a dozen valve covers from that load of motors. I remember needing one and the guy would only sell me three I think?

I’m Always up for another Rocky build thread :)

We’ll all that the motor needs is to come off the stand! 7A5F6B4B-9337-472B-A6F7-69FEB4C752D9.jpeg then I can bolt on the flywheel and get towards bolting the trans on. EE01AD3B-73AF-46CA-8B92-487DA63EA429.jpeg chuckled at the hood, block, distributor and engine stand being g the same red. 453DBB37-E25A-48F1-B3D5-0731B1542BE9.jpeg left overs! Currently cleaning g off the table full of dead motor parts sorting into “junk to keep” and “junk to junk”

once that’s done I can put the table away and gain some space, then next on the list is finishing the front shock mounts and other little things. Much easier to do before the drivetrain is back in.

gonna be tight but I’m hopeful that I’ll be driving for Christmas

Still cleaning up and putting engine parts away before moving forward. Little shop tip for you guys that like to keep a clean shop. Giant roll of butcher paper! It’s also great for drawing on but I always lay it down when I’m doing dirty projects on my benches C9CED6E8-E031-4346-99FC-2DCED370D262.jpeg BAE06D2B-7253-4A6D-AAB5-4A203705BA12.jpeg that had the very oily taken apart small block on it since July. 393F635C-1BF0-42CF-A005-5E36B7144FD5.jpeg Two layers E6FFDD21-4BB3-43F2-AC44-E94F37CEA497.jpeg That is all that’s there to clean up!

202FC7BD-3500-4210-9441-F26A004058B4.jpeg Hmm creative problem solving E0AC266F-FFAB-4F8E-AB1F-9C3CECB787A2.jpeg 590DEE84-F95D-49C2-9E47-DDC596F852D3.jpeg off the stand onto a **** load of wood blocks. I really should just build some metal stands to sit the side mounts on but by the time I do that the motor will back in the car.

anyhow I’m poised to bolt the motor and trans together tonight and start the dance back into the car

Flex plate on, trans bolted on, dipstick installed. And everything set back on the jenga stack. Just need to put convertor bolts in.

didn’t take photos but did take some of this! 30424CCA-7735-4096-95D6-A0DCEB6B7A36.jpeg A6A850D8-C132-4748-919C-5C33DC7B24B6.jpeg id had a cardboard box full of razor knife cut holes to keep all the lifters and rods in order from the cam we pulled out of the 283. Nothing wrong with it. I’d be surprised if it was run past being broken in. So I went hunting and found this $5 harbor freight organizer. Keeps all the lifters in order/matched to the cam and let’s me slide it into a cabinet and store it super easy

I used POR15 manifold paint on mine in 2015, still holding up well. I sprung for $36 worth of stainless hardware to hold them on. I do like the look of the white though.

Progress! 8DD9E95C-4694-43C2-98B9-C5770A52B85E.jpeg got the motor and trans resting in the car 945063D6-2A9B-4FE5-8E19-0B5BD4170CC3.jpeg wheels back on and sitting on the ground two feet lower than it’s been in months!

the drivers side mount has a bolt threw but the p***enger side isn’t quite centered where I want it. I need to get the trans mount bolted on and I’m sure that wiggle will bring the motor mount in line.

then I’ll pull the rear u joint and get the driveshaft back in place. Not sure what I’ll do after that. Maybe put the exhaust manifolds on and wiggle the exhaust back into place. I think I’ll wire it last so when it can fire I’m ready to do so.

Realized I forgot to update. Only have a minute so bullet points.

motor and trans mounts lined up and bolted down

    driveshaft in.

radiator, hoses and trans cooler hoses in- mounts need tightened up a little

alternator, ground strap, carb, fan, belt on.

probably half a dozen other small tedious things as well. Gonna try to nip a few more off the list tonight

everything getting cleaned, painted, new gaskets, clocked and adjusted makes two or three bolts a tedious morning of work but I’d rather try to do it right the first time and avoid fixing it later

Don't know how I missed all of this? Good progress. There is just something special about a clean sbc in a fat fendered Ford driver.

    Back on it this morning!

I keep finding stuff that I was catching on when we pulled the motor out with a much to small hoist. Today I bent this brace back in place and got it all back together. It does feel like it’s shifted some but I’m sure it’s no worse than what’s happened the last 70 or so years. Got the carb bolted down tight and all the hoses, linkages and brackets more or less attached. Might be able to pop it off the weekend if I keep good pace! 9D241CDF-F6F1-46DC-B83E-B37FB6076666.jpeg F1FE1071-23AE-49CB-AF85-D4985C962C64.jpeg F7D335A8-207C-4CD0-A35B-527F2DF0FF79.jpeg

It’s for a first gen mustache but I think it’s got kind of a generic mounting flange. I want to say it’s northern brand?

Not sure where I was when I left off but I’ve Gotten some more done. Only things left on the engine side are bolting the exhaust manifolds on and head pipes, filling with coolant and attaching the vacuum line to the trans.

trans/inside side I need to bend the vacuum line and instal it, attach the trans cooler lines and fill it, put the shifter back together on the trans, and put the floor back in, gas pedal pad back on.

That might be it? Then I’ll pull the rear shock that cam lose off and take a drive!

then I’ll finish my upper shock mount project/s hopefully by then my hood latch for the red hood shows up and I can get a few Rudolph miles in :) 37ADF9EB-DB67-4EB0-881E-FBE300D3C0D3.jpeg It’s taking a while because I’m making it all tedious lol. I can’t make it as clean as I would a fresh build but I can make it better then it was. Sanded down both sides for the nut and washer to attach the wire from the coil to the distributor greased them up heat shrunk it all and tried to tuck it all out of the way best I could. Five minutes into 50 minutes. But I’d rather the extra 45 be in the garage and not in the shoulder so I’m hoping it’s justified

Ordered exhaust flange gasket/ donuts and spent two hours trying to get the p***enger side exhaust manifold on. The y/head pipe is rocking around in a funny way and it’s just making it all clash. Got literally nothing done. But it is what it is. If I had an extra set of hands it might be easier but my the time I find help I’ll have gotten it done.

hitting it again in the morning.
