Just signed onto the HAMB today, but need some help. I'm not that great with 6volt systems that run with generators. I searched this but nothing is like what I have. Its a stock 292 Ford two barrel which has ran great until last week. Girl went to start it to get get home and nothing. Went over used a 6 volt jumper and the car ran fine for a week. A week later it died again, no power to anything, not even the starter clicking, completely dead. So I got a new battery and the thing started right up. This morning she went to drive it to work and the thing is completely dead, no clicking no cab lights, just dead last the prior week. Anyone got any ideas as I have little experience with these systems. This weekend or tonight I will try and search for grounded wires and lose connections but is there anything else it could be.
two things that you need to do ; 1) check the voltage at the battery with the car NOT running, then start the car hold the idle up a bit and check voltage again- it should be higher than the first reading now, if not, your gen/reg not working. 2) check for a draw(more likely),make sure everything is turned off(if you have dome/hood lights either pull the bulbs or make sure they're off. pull the neg batt cable and hook a test light to the cable and touch the probe to the neg post- it should NOT light-up, if it does, you have a draw;pull one fuse at a time until your light goes out. whatever is fed from that fuse is the source of your draw. if there are more than one item powered from that fuse, disconnect them one at a time until your light goes out and you've found your problem.....start with these checks
I agree with everything above. If you do suspect a battery draw when the car is setting. A band aid fix would be to install a battery shutoff. The best thing of course is to trace the short. I can't figure out why a 292 Y block has a 6 volt system?? I thought by the time they came out Ford had changed to the 12 volt genny.
thanks for the reply. we did rewire the headlights and tail lights a few months back. i know these were done right because i didn't really help all that much. we did use a meter to find everything and it had ran great since then. i will try these things and hopefully find the problem.
