Just starting my first A and we're going through getting the mechanical brakes back in good order. Is there a way to identify original steel brake drums from cast iron? I haven't got them in the parts cleaner yet but didn't notice any stamping.

Only the late 31's had cast iron drums. They have always been hard to find, very doubtful thats what you have. Cast iron drums have open windows on the front like 32 35 drums, you can see the brakes once the wheel is off

Sorry, I should have clarified. I was thinking they may be aftermarket cast iron.

The stamped steel have a thin edge where they are by the backing plate.

I think it's pretty obvious. But maybe I'm wrong.

The stamped units are pretty easy to tell that they are stamped steel once you study them a bit.. Screenshot (108).png

I did just the same.. steel ones have a return lip on the edge of the drum. Sometimes they also have a reinforcing band but not always. 99% of cast iron drums on model As are modern aftermarket parts. Good to see someone restoring the original system.

Awesome, thanks guys. The return lip is definitely the clearest indicator for me. There is so much to learn and I'm about 100 years behind.
