Regarding the nonexistent supercharger, Hollywood has always been pretty deficient in automotive accuracy.

    Hello,
Perhaps, those so called hot rod guys should have been placed under this code that is popular for a lot of people and made aware of the number from the Van Halen song of the same number: 5150

    Goin' wide
    Runnin' long
    Feelin' lost
    But not for long

5150 is the number of the section of the Welfare and Institutions Code, which allows an adult who is experiencing a mental health crisis to be involuntarily detained for a 72- hour psychiatric hospitalization when evaluated to be a danger to others, or to himself or herself, or gravely disabled.

In California, law enforcement officers and mental health professionals can place a patient on an emergency 72-hour hold, or “5150”, if, due to a mental illness, they are determined to pose a danger to themselves (DTS), a danger to others (DTO), or they are “gravely disabled” (GD).

What no supercharger? Two barrels with 4 barrel filter caps just made it look different. So, yes, 5150 plays into this scene. Good old Broderick Crawford to stop the confusion... yea!

No one gets away from he and his trusty Buick sedan.

I love Hiway patrol. It is on everyday here but it is on at 4 am, usually get to see it about once a week. Interesting how the police cars are 2 door sedans...

Some of the absolute worst acting ever. But some of the characters wind up on Dragnet and then even Adam 12. I watch all three because the good guys always win.

I know it's just TV, but every-time I watch that episode I so want the younger brother to tell off his older brother.
With his talent for building that car he's got his whole life ahead of him for good.

The thing that really interests me is that the '55 Buick two door posts are Century's (a model not available to the general public). The story I heard is that Buick made a separate run on Special two door posts with the 322 ci engine (instead of the Special's 264 ci engine) specifically for the CHP. They were badged as Century's if you look hard. The Century was basically the Special body with the big Roadmaster engine. To the public, it was available as a 2 door hardtop, four door hardtop, a station wagon, a convertible, and a four door sedan.

I find Highway patrol to be one of the best "car-watching" shows around. I sit there and try to imagine all of those two-door post base models with the biggest engine available and stick shifts. I wonder if there are any still around?

I read that they only used Buicks that one year. They found them to be great in a straight line, but if you had to negotiate a high speed curve, look out! As the former owner of a '56 Buick Super, I know what they're talking about.

That's not a real CHP car. It is a replica made using a Special two door hardtop that some would-be Broderick Crawford put together. I saw it in a TV show someplace and they interviewed the owner/builder.

Funny you posted this today. I had YouTube pulled up on the shop tv Tuesday and watched/listened to several episodes. Guess I’ll have to watch this one now. Thanks @Jive-Bomber

We used to align those Buick boxcars in Concord. I'd always crank some positive caster into 'em, what a difference!
Good performance when tuned, some of the 'tighter' chassis GM cars.

I watched that show every week when I was a kid. We only had one channel here though.
I don't remember if my grade school Bob Geffre even had a TV in his house in the 50's but he end up being a career Chip after he got out of the Marines and married a Cali gal spending most of his time in Susanville.

When you stuck that Super or Roadmaster engine in a Special you had a fast car on your hands. One of my favorite cars I ever owned was a 55 Buick Special with the engine and trans out of a big Super sedan. 200 dollar total investment in 1966 money.

Same here. I started watching HP a couple nights ago. Love seeing the cars and the highways when they were new. What an odd coincidence.

Ever notice on Leave it to Beaver that all the cars on the street are '62 Mopars?

I watched an episode not long ago that had Clint Eastwood as a member of a cycle gang.

In the later years, American Motors supplied the vehicles on ADAM-12. In one episode, Officer Pete Malloy had a brand new car he was (supposedly) very proud of that was damaged. It was a Marlin. I wonder how Martin Milner took that after "Route 66"?

I think Petes car that was damaged was a 73 or so AMC Matador..... that episode was on just a couple weeks ago..

Yep, you're right. Just about the same thing though. An AMX or even a Javelin might have been acceptable, but the other two?
