Projects Are these worth a crap? Strippers inside

I see them for sale all over ebay, the old Amazon etc. Never used one. I need to strip the hood on my 56 for louvers. Just wondering if these are worth messing with. Are they all the same? I see brands with words that make no sense out of China, for about half of what others cost. Are they all coming over on the same boat and being rebranded?

 

Anytime you can get 2 strippers for the price of 1, I would say that's a good deal.....

I use the stipper wheels like that, love them.

 

We used the actual 3m ones at the shop all the time

 

There are nothing as cold as the hollow eyes of a stripper.

 

Just do not run them over a sharp edge, they shred real fast.

 

The 3M brand are the best I've used. Good for removing paint and only paint. If near an edge, make sure you tilt it to spin your contact area off of the edge; if you try to spin on to an edge, you won't like what happens.

 

The 3M ones work great.

 

I'm guessing the purple are supposed to last longer? I normally just blast stuff, but it's supposed to be kinda rainy here for the next few days.

 

I've bought other brands from Amazon, my experience is that the 3M purple stripit discs last about 2 to 3 times longer than off brand.

 

I’m having a hard time finding the 3m is purple for angle grinders. I find a ton of knock offs. I’ll keep looking.

 

They worked great for cleaning a frame but yea, the knock offs don't last long.

 

Another yes vote. I bought mine from a couple of places. Way less than half the local 3m stuff and worked just as well. My truck had many layers to deal with, so I opted to use a heat gun and razor scraper for body filler and really deep old enamel repaint/repair the switched to the strippers. Much faster than sanding disks and no gouges from my mistakes!

 

Good to know. I ordered the knock offs. I'll try and blast it first, then hit it with the disc. The weatherman says it should be clear Sat.

 

When I bought my PU the PO had sand blasted the cab but due to a wet environment the can surface rusted. He shot epoxy primer over the rust to save it but all of that had to be moved in order to paint. Being it was sand blasted once already I opted not to do it again. @Pist-n-Broke recommended getting an adapter for my variable speed grinder and 6" (I think they were 6") red 3M hook n loop, stripper pads. It took 3 pads to strip the cab and doors.

The last one is still on the grinder and I used it to strip the paint off my daughters hood on her PU so I could get some paint on it prior to winter this year.

 

I've used various brands and they work great for removing paint. As has been said, edges shred them quick.

Be careful though, they make a lot of dust. I used two discs cleaning paint off of an old snow blower. Wearing a dust mask and safety glasses Went in the house for a shower after, all the dust that was on my face and hair washed into my eyes and they burned for about 3 days. That I don't recommend.

 

i've used 3M in the past, can't seemto find them anymore. eastwood keeps moving back the in stock date on them. i purchased a six pack of the ones root posted, haven't tried them yet. rather use the 3M 7inch pads on my 4000rpm right angle polisher

 

I've had the same experience as some of the others, The cheaper ones work ok but don't last as long. I like them because they don't take metal away or leave scratch marks on the metal.
I've got an Eastwood contour SCT that with the right drums will strip paint like a maniac but it gives you a workout in the process.

 

I've used some of the knock-off strippers and loved them but didn't last long so if I could find some 3m locally I'd definitely use more of them!

As far as the other strippers, lived with 2 of them at the same time, sure was a fun summer ! Just wished like hell my house had more bathrooms at the time !

Now that sounds like an interesting story.

 

I started out using the off-brand product. Liks any tool there is a learning curve. These things are basically woven plastic. Tool speed is a big deal. Spin them to fast they melt. I went to 3M and instantly seen the benefit in spending a little more. I can tell you I get 3 to 4 times the square foot of work out of them. Lean on them to hard, spin them to fast or run over anything jagged and sharp and you just wasted some money. It doesn't matter what brand strip disc you're using. Another thing I do is use my air gun and blow them out often. The load up and just stop cutting, a little air and your back to work with the same pad.

 

This all started by researching the Eastwood SCT drum sander. Once I started adding up the cost, I decided to cheap out.

 

I bought something like that to strip a van one time. It had a shank and you put it in a vsr drill. Thing reminded me of a hard sponge, a rock hard one. It was only about one inch wide and about four inches in diameter. Took a while, but it did a good job cleaning off paint and rust.

 

I don’t think it will take much. Here’s a pic of the hood. I’m supposed to pick it up over the weekend.

 

Another nice thing about them is they don't gouge bare metal, and you can seal and paint the item straight away. Love those things.

 

I wouldn't recommend these that I bought from Lowes. They will plug up just trying to strip mill scale on 16ga sheet metal, same as you see on my workbench top in background.

 

I luv those things! Took me about 4 hours to strip my entire '54 down to bare metal! I bought a 5-pack but only needed 3 discs to do the job. You'll have that '56 hood done in no time! One thing though, the discs will leave the metal with a smooth finish. It's best to go over it with 80g on a DA to give the primer something to bite into.

Seems like more of us use the discs rather than the SCT...?

 

I think I will eventually invest in the SCT, but right now I’ll give the discs a shot.

 

I bought the SCT that Harbor Freight sells, exactly like Eastwoods but about $60 bucks cheaper. Works great.
