I want to find the Ansen center cap that's dished like in the first pic.

I've been told the wheel is an Ansen, Grant, and Covico. I have seen ads, I think someone posted an old ad in my build thread but it's too long to pour through and find it.

I remember back in the day going to swap meets and on about every table would sit one of these types of steering wheels pictured on this thread and you could buy them for a few bucks. Last summer while going through some boxes in my mother's garage I came across a brand new Grant blue metal flake steering with a two dollar price tag still on it that I must have bought at some point.

  5. I disagree.....That article doesn't refer to the wheel in the Coupe. And it's different than the ones in that ad. Maybe the ones in the '58 and the '55.

  6. Mine doesn't have equal spokes, like the Covico, so it must be an Ansen/Grant. You can tell by the top section .

  7. I'm new to the hobby, but I've never understood why people tend to dislike the american graffiti coupe. Its a chopped 32 with an sbc, i suppose the car is a bit too nice for a kid in high school to build, but i don't really see why people dislike it.
feel free to explain, i would love to learn why.

It has the most to do with the goofy chopped grill shell way too low... just look at it once, you will see.... the rear fenders are weird too..... don't get me wrong, It is a great movie that had a lot to do with the rebirth of hot rodding, but the coupe could have been way better than it was

  9. Just because been over done....lots of bad clones. Many can't get passed the chopped down grill. Personally...I like it.

  10. i mean, it gives it a more aggressive stance, if it had a hood it would look kind of like a salt flat car, i will say, you are right about the rear fenders, they should have been a tad higher in the front and a little lower in the rear.

  11. I disagree....Most of the time the grill is chopped down when the car is channeled. Doesn't look right on a Highboy. This has been beat to death, so maybe let it die, lol.

Years ago, I read that the original intention was to channel the body to match the grille, but they ran out of time and/or money, so it was what it was.

Bob, I think you have a fairly rare wheel, one that’s in an iconic studio requested Lucas documented loose biopic of a much different time in of Hot Rod History.
A very old friend knew that wheel in all the pix above. He stated that it was indeed a “Covico”
He cited the much flatter spokes than any Grant or Superior 500 series wheels.
    Good company to be in.

I'm not sure @Nicholas Coe has chimed in or not but I'd like to hear his take on the steering wheels...he had a pretty faithful clone and if I had to choose a copy it would have been number one for me...and hell there's a lot of goofy in Hotrod...

I believe his youngster was having health issues and he may be tending to that...hopefully things are going okay...

  23. I HAVE SEEN ABOUT 4 EXTREMELY WELL DONE CLONES, INCLUDING THE ONE THAT WAS BUILT BY A HAMBER, THAT HAD ISSUES WITH THE MANAFRE MANIFOLD. For every good one, there's 100 bad ones. Like when guys use a Model A instead of a 32. lol

Right. A cheap steering wheel that you probably could have bought at Pep Boys, is elevated to being a sacred item, due to incidentally being in a movie prop...move the fuck on.

OR....you could do what I do, and just not click on threads that I've become bored or disenchanted with.

It's interesting when you see parts that you took for granted that you thought would always be available aren't easy to come by these days. It used to be easy to find these Cal Custom scoops at about every swap meet for five to ten bucks and maybe it's just me but try to get one now without breaking the bank. scoop.jpg
