Its a forged crank....the vast majority of small journal Chevy crankshafts are forged.

All '55-'63 crankshafts were forged; '64-'67 p***enger car 283s were cast....so, next time, have your damned coffee first!:D

When I was building my '39 Chev during the pandemic I checked everyday on local ads for an engine to build. One morning I saw an ad for a SBC 350 that was just a short block, but rebuilt, and only asking $100! By chance it was at an import repair shop only 8 blocks from me, so I called and rushed right over. Gave it a quick look sitting on an engine stand, and it was a 4 bolt main roller motor! So paid him the $100, and after loading it he asked if I wanted the intake and distributor for free too? So tossed in the Edelbrock intake, and a HEI distributor.
I figured they were probably fibbing a little, so once I hung it on my engine stand I tore it apart to see what I'd bought. It was as advertised, with all new rings and bearings, and an unknown new cam. I called him to ask what the cam was, but all he said was it's an RV cam, so I replaced the cam with a Howard's performance roller cam, and slapped on Dart heads. I figured at $100 I could afford to put a good cam and heads on it, and still be in it cheap.

I realize one mistake I've made. Getting rid of those heads and intake.. so its a 283 forged crank and we verified earlier 327 stock pistons? We never verified the rods. So the pistons set down in the bore and if they don't everything has been decked? Meaning now I have no intake or heads?

4 inch bore? probably not 327 pistons but has 302 or 283 plus .125 pistons. they have the same bore size but the wrist pin hole is changed so the piston has the correct deck height. I don't think it is possible to deck a block as much as would be needed

Earlier in the thread, someone identified the casting number on the pistons to be for a 327; if that's the case, this engine had some very unspectacular compression.

Yup , 5:30 am and no coffee makes for some interesting conversations. At least I knew a 67 was in there.

Looking at the bore pics and comparing the ring wear mark , it doesn’t look right , I mean I know where a 3 in stroke and a 327 piston should land in the bore and just going by the pics I dont think it lines up .
    What do others see ?

Post 126 woops too late . I don’t remember seeing one with the pistons in it . Hopefully he has some stored . I was trying to guesstimate the compression with a 4” bore .250 down and a .040 head gasket with 60 cc chambers . ( I know 64cc but 60 was easier to use ) . Needless to say I screwed up and will try again , I think I’ll

Heres a shot of his piston and block . Look at how much space between the top ring and second , then try to determine which wear marks are what . It will be a day or two before I can even find out if I have a picture stored. I picked up the crank and carried it over to the steps and had it resting against my legs with my phone in my pocket. It absolutely shattered the screen. I'm getting pictures and posting with one of my old phones at the moment.

Flipped the block over and got 3 more pistons out. One doesn’t wanna leave it’s home yet. 6807A98B-900E-4FDD-ACE4-B2B010A1E6A2.jpeg FC8F6768-CE9C-4730-AF9B-090D176F388C.jpeg

I never did update and tell people the $200 engine has been in the Jeep for awhile... anyway I never even put points in the rb distributor. Just dropped it into the block. Anyway to tell if it’s anything special?

If the distributor housing is aluminum, it will have an I.D. number stamped on it, along with a date code. If it's cast iron, it would have a thin metal I.D. tag wrapped around it, unless someone threw it away like they enjoy doing with carburetor tags.

Going to have to crop the 350 and 400 crank shots off there. Not traditional. LOL;)
