What is good to put on bare metal body to keep it from rusting. I used metal etch but I can still see rust starting to come thru.

My FJ custom has been bare metal for 12 years with one light coat & I'm in a cold climate.
Cheap & easily removed with laquer thinner if your not happy.

Houston's average relative humidity is 90% so what works here in Utah won't likely be the best advice.

I'd recommend talking to other Texans like @Bass or @MR. FORD whom have both run bare steel for years.

My assumption is that they use Gibb's but I'm not sure what else they do... like how often or where/how the cars are stored and whatnot.

Best i found if its not clear coat you want is simple fully synthetic motor oil. That stuff creeps across the surface and is drawn into gaps and is extremely persistent. Apply with a rag or put a few drops on and work it in.

My experience with clear coat is spider trials of rust will eventually develop I presume from small scratches in the surface, not sure maybe some can explain what process takes place, I use the Gibbs product..

  14. I don't get the whole "bare metal" deal. Primer it, paint it, of fuck, just spray clear on it. To me it's like leaving your fly open.

Been using Gibbs for about 20 years worked great on the bare metal roadsters I built.

You live in Houston Texas. Paint it. Or move to Arizona, Nevada, or New Mexico.

  22. Uhh you live in Houston? I suppose you could keep oiling it. The next caretaker will hate you when he tries to get paint to stick. Bare metal is a fad that will eventually end.

  26. Gibbs worked for me. It's the only petroleum product my body man will allow in the shop. Wipes off with lacquer thinner. 34rear3_4ths2016.jpg [/ATTACH]

  27. I use drain oil and kerosene (diesel fuel) on my chassis to keep them from rusting.
While I have screwed lots of cars together over the years that never actually got a finished paint job I have never owned a forever car, so I probably would not consider that whatever car I own will never get painted.
