I recently picked up a 57 Chevy with a 235. Sometimes I get a really bad vibration throughout the truck when releasing the clutch. I noticed the front engine mount bushings were pretty much deteriorated so I replaced them and also put a new clutch return spring because the last one was some long rigged up spring. These haven’t fixed the issue. Is it possible it’s a clutch adjustment or does it sound like I should just replace the clutch all together? Thanks!
Do you get under any other cir***stances like WOT in first gear? Also if you slip the clutch on a hill start.
If you're talking about ," clutch chatter" then yes , replace the clutch , pressure plate , throw out bearing ,pilot bushing ,& flywheel ( or have it resurfaced by someone who has the equipment to Blanchard grind )
there are usually two different causes of vibration like that, which is called clutch chatter. One is that the engine/bellhousing mounts are loose, and when the clutch starts to engage, it throttle gets moved a little, then this starts a big oscillation of the whole engine in the frame. The spring cushion in the center of the clutch disc plays into this type of oscillation. In this case, looking at what is moving around as you engage the clutch might point you to what need to be fixed, and replacing the clutch disc itself may or may not help. I had a 59 Chevy truck with the six that would do this, I never did figure out how to fix it, aside from changing my driving habits. This truck had all new mounts, and new clutch. The other cause is the clutch "grabbing", because the surface isn't smooth, which is sometimes caused by oil on the disc, or burned spots on the pressure plate and flywheel. In this case, replacing the clutch and surfacing the flywheel is necessary.
TF has a 1 piece shaft. To the OP, it sounds like it's clutch time with a quality resurface of the flywheel like other said.
