Technical Odd BBC Noise, take a guess!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Ian Thompson, Feb 19, 2023.

  1. Pinching the fuel line, helps diagnose fuel pump issue, if it's diaphragm related, as it affects the fuel flow and pressure. Which can be an issue. I've experienced the broken spring, and pivot pin popping out on one side, and long screwdriver to use as sounding tool helped me with those. Or as you suggest pull and inspect, and run it on the carb bowl gas to see if noise is gone.

So! Removed the fuel pump, no damage to rod. However the fuel pump lever does rock back and forth, and the pin that retains it seems to pop out of the crimp, not enough to fully come out but definitely makes a noise! Hopefully, this is the issue!

So did you run the motor with the fuel pump off the car? That's how you find out if the fuel pump is the problem.

Another one to throw out there!!
I chased down a noise that would happen about ever 30 - 50 seconds in between the sound,& then
1-4 seconds of sound @ or above 2,500 rpms of steady driving rpms.
It took me a few weeks to narrow it down,
I was a bad valve guild,
The sound resembled when you slap a valve in to a seat when setting up heads .

I have also used heater hose, whatever is around. A wooden dowel works too, 1/2" to 3/4" or an old broom stick, even cheap firring strip.

I had a similar problem on my big block. Turned out the crank pulley bolt holes were worn and the pulley had slop-only made noise at idle

Well couldn't verify the sound goes away with the pump removed since the engine has to be hot to make the noise.. Either way its an old pump and seems sloppy. New pump coming in a couple of days. will report back!

At least you don’t have to pay up for a motel room while you wait;)
