I just recently told someone, "If you can build it right, the number of doors won't matter if its cool or not." And, with a mordoor, you can haul the kids more easily, then with the kids are gone, more room for more fun, more easily!:D

I have. When I bought my '57 Chevy someone had done this exact modification decades earlier. Judging by the orange fur pinned into the interior and the high school parking lot sticker on the rear window, I'm thinking some high school kids in the late 70's did it. They filled in the door handle holes and the body seams except for the one along the roof, and they used 2 door Belair quarter inserts, but with the 4 door stainless.

All the looks of the 4 door sedan and none of the convenience, makes getting in the back seat even harder due to the shorter front doors. Did it fool anyone? I for one didn't even notice the back doors had been sealed off until after I bought the car at the auction.

40+ years later, I re-did their "conversion" with proper length doors and B pillars. Unfortunately most of their white paint job blew off with a pressure washer. I tried to paint the new door to match, it kinda worked. Good enough until the whole car gets painted.

If you like 4 doors, the world is your oyster, lots of bargains out there and lots of raw materials to work with. I've had a few, and I don't begrudge anyone who wants to build one. But I can't stand when people talk about how much more room they have. In (almost) every case, they're identically sized inside, just with a different door arrangement.

  3. My mom had a more door '66 Buick Special Deluxe. She loved that car. Her and her boyfriend borrowed my car for a weekend so me and some of my buddies shoe horned a nail head in there and told her we put dual exhaust on it while they were gone. It was funny watching her leave the driveway. She loved it actually, her boy friend not so much. he said we ruined the value of the car, blah blah. We changed it back the following weekend. :(

  4. I have to say that I don’t go looking for four doors. But, I also have to admit that they pretty much feel the same as a two door from this perspective and are a lot less money typically.

When I was in high school the 2 door 4 door thing was a big deal. My buddy had the choice of a 53 Chevy 2 door or a 4 door 348 powered 58. He drove the 53

Isn’t this exactly what the original poster was recommending, - putting the door latches up front…….
I think that you are just encouraging him ……..:D

...until you hit the gas pedal. pulled up to a red light with a nice stocker V8 56 Chevy one time. he took off on the green and I could see him speed shifting the 3 speed. we met up at the next light I floored it up to about 40 or so and he was just sitting there at the light with a funny look on his face.

another time a friends cousin was checking out my sedan as I was getting in to leave, he saw the tach under the dash and made a "funny" comment about how I really needed that tach thinking it was a stocker, it had headers and 2 1/4" pipes out the back. VROOOM! . had a real good sound to it.:)

I bet most 4 door haters still wear bell bottoms and Stroker caps.

I have a 62 Bel Air 4-door sedan. I wanted a 4-door or wagon, and the car I found was a one-owner survivor. 19 years later, it still wears its original paint and interior (but much lower and more power), and I am the second owner of a fun survivor driver that my future children will grow up with memories of. Other peoples determination of whether it's worthy of collecting couldn't matter less to me.

I take it you must have a 4 door since you seem a bit defensive?

The more guys that were actually there in the day die off the more four doors get popular.

If you look at the old " Little Page books " quite a few 4 doors were built.

Really good to see that a lot more hot rodders are beginning to appreciate the 4drs.

That means more 2drs for me.

you got me! My daily is a 4 door Chevrolet Blazer. actually I've had about 30 running driving old cars from 1949-1970 and only 2 were 4 doors, a 62 Cadillac and a 1949 Chevrolet.
I like old American cars. all of them. there is not one good condition American car or truck older than say 1965 that I would not mind owning and driving.

where do you get your bell bottoms?

From some angles they look okay, (and can also be used as bridesmaids cars) …….

  28. Really? My dad is 74 and he doesn't remember any 4 door stigma.

What he does remember is a stigma for cars with automatic transmission, and A/C.

As a matter of fact dad drove a 4 door 58 Del-Ray to high school (Class of 67) had automatic transmission, but he had collected all the pats to change it a manual but sold it.

He talks about one of this classmates driving a 57 Buick Roadmaster 2 door and everyone trying to figure out way he would want to drive an old man's car.

If I ever do another 4 door it will most likely be another hardtop...... This car was sold to Norway but still haunts my dreams.....
