Any of you with A/C in a '49-'51 Shoebox ford?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Reggie, Sep 15, 2006.

  1. After the long hot drive from Mokan to Austin, I decided I'm getting old and need A/C in my shoebox.

I'd like to put in one of those early-1960's underdash units....the ones with the cool chrome air vents, but the bottom of a shoe box dash isn't flat. Any of you put one of these in where it looks pretty cool? Can you post some pics?

    Thanks!

  2. i've seen people use the 60's mustang a/c unit, they repo them and they look old. i just pulled a newer mustang style unit from a customer '51 woody wagon and i think it's going into my panel truck :).

Heres mine that came out of a 65 Mustang. It needs 16" of flat surface, blows freezing cold, and is available brand new. There are usually plenty of similar ones at the swap meets for about $100.

I knew driving the Caddilac back from Paso a couple years ago was going to
put bad ideas in your head. ;)

Next you're going to be asking where to install the radio :) :) :)

Here are a couple of shoeboxes with the OLD AIR brand unit. The one unit is imstalled in the original Magic Air housing. IMHO they are very nice units. I'd buy one again.

  8. FP,
The grey interiored '50 looks to have the stock heater. Does the AC unit integrate with it?

Bump, I like that setup. I wish the dash in my '50 was flat like your '51. Mine has contours on the bottom.

That answer your question? ;) They just used the original heater housing (Magic Air) to cover the evaporator section....nicely done too!

    Flat Ernie,
Yep that's what he did alright. The guy who did that hangs out on shoeboxford.com. Has a nice series of photos of the installation. Very nicly done.

This really isn't what you asked for, but I thought it turned out nicely.
