I’ve finally found a replacement fender for my 37 coupe, however it’s in Florida & I’m in Montana. I’ve never shipped anything large before so I really could use some advice in getting it here & without damage. Approximate size of the fender only: 66” long, 25” high & 32” deep I did check out Fastenal for shipping but there’s a line in the middle of the US they don’t cross so that doesn’t work. Photos are just for reference.
I just bought a complete front seat for my 40 Ford. It was in northern Michigan, I'm in Washington state. I used Forward Air less than a load program. The seller fastened the seat on a pallet and wrapped it in plastic wrap with a label. We did a Dock to Dock freight that saved me a bunch being there was no pick-up or delivery truck handling. It was marked Top Load Only and listed as such on the manifest. It arrived in 3 days safe and sound without a single issue. It was all done on the phone and their people were outstanding with help. In other words, it was WAY easy!
Is it steel or Fibergl*** ? If it's Fibergl*** there are several companies that sell them and closer to you. If it's steel, build a heavy duty crate for it. Seriously. No exceptions. If you don't there is a very good chance it will be tin foil when you get it. It could still in a crate get banged up but not nearly as bad if you don't crate it. There is one in Minnesota right now on Ebay https://www.ebay.com/itm/325529756363?chn=p***kevt=1&mkcid=28
ltl carriers maybe your only option with sometime that big. Bolt or wire to a pallet, need a big pallet so the fender will not hang over on side or ends (end more importantly). If you crate it build it to hold a ton of weight, being round it’s unlikely they would stack on it, just warp it.
I used Greyhound to ship a '40 Ford coupe trunk lid about ten or so years ago. It was really cheap compaired to everyone else. It took about 2 weeks to go five states away, but everything went good. Funny part of the whole thing was, the depot man had me put it on a scale, then he slapped a shipping lable on it, told me to put it in the corner of the room and that was it. No crate, no box or anything. Gene.
I second using forward air. I used them to ship a car body to England, the whole deal was super easy, I did build a crate for it....
I think this only applies to budget freight haulers and independent ones. I can't say enough Good about Forward Air. It was Easy, there wasn't a stretch mark in the Plastic wrap or a wrinkle in the fabric. It was a white glove treatment all the way.
Greyhound no longer ships freight. Greyhound will end its package express shipping operations as of September 30, 2022. In conjunction with ending the service, placing an online shipment will not be available past September 15, 2022. After more than 100 years of proudly serving you with your shipping needs throughout the United States, we are discontinuing this service so that we can focus on our core business of providing affordable, convenient, and comfortable travel to millions of p***engers throughout the country.
How about having Fastenal ship to the closest-to-you-dealer on-the-"line", then driving there to get it? Not ideal, but may be a workable solution? Marcus...
