I am about to be ***emble my front end. I have a stock axle maybe 28-31 ford with 49-54 spindles. but my problem is when measuring for fitment of the spindles into the axle there is no room for the bearing between the axle and the spindle. I am sure that a few of you have run into this before. What is the best way to correct this? I have searched but have not really found an answer so maybe its just my parts.
As I remember it, your going to find a few more things that don't quite mix. I belive the Ford King Pin is larger in dia. and the King Pin to bearing shaft angle is quite a bit different by several degrees. It's going to require some machine shop work at the least. That's why the early Ford round back spindles are in demand and the after market suppliers started re-making them. It's just easier to go Ford to Ford there and do wheelbearing adapters to G.M. brakes. The Wizzard
The ford and chevys have different kingpin inclination. this means that the camber geometry will be way off. Many people do run chevy spindles on their street/hot rods but run aftermarket tube axles with the correct kingpin angle and the boss is the correct length to accept the bearings etc... i have not heard of anyone using Chevy spindles on a 'stock/modified' Model A axle. I am not sure why this would be something one would want to do anyhow, but if this is want you are trying to do, I would expect to spend quite a bit having the axle bosses reconfigured. As far as running 'Chevy' brakes on a Ford spindle, there are a few manufacturers who have kits to do this. I use ECI for my cars as he is local to me and the quality is top notch. you can check him out at ecihotrodbrakes.com if interested.
The use of chevy spindles on early ford axle was and is more common than you might think . the axle needs honed out to 49'54 specs, then clean up top and bottom of boss to the height of the stacked bearing and boss.Get a kingpin set from speedway . The problem with the king pin angle can be corrected at alignment time .Or leave it alone and run modern radial tires. Also the spindles can be machined to fit mustang ll or pinto drums . Did a few and have them for my '29 A later JimB.
I am doing everything as stated except for the corrected king pin angle. How exactly do you take care of that? Also I am going to be running bias tires for looks more than anything because of the white walls. Thank you for your input.
A special thanks to crossthread for helping me out on this. Ya I could have taken a way easier route, but why? I have to be different! The easy way would have been running a smallblock chevy like everyone else, but I couldn't do that either. Thanks again
I am changing my friends 29 Ford from Traditional Steering to Cross Steering. I have found that she is running the 49-54 Chevy spindles. My question is about the Kingpin angle stated here and how Alignment would correct this. Her tire lay in at the top. I just thought her Axle was bent. Now I am wondering.
