At the Nats in Looville, walked about a mile to a pass gate to go across the street for a sandwich. The guy at the gate wouldn't stamp my hand unless I could show my button or ticket stub.

DUDE! I'm already in, just wanna go out for a sandwich.

I ran into a d!ck twice 2 years ago at GG. First day I was there he was sitting in his truck yelling at me to not drive across a 8 ft. piece of grass to get to a camper. Which I kept going. Then the next day I was going to go around the track and he called a SWAT team because I had a beer cooler in the back. Everybody else had one to, they just weren't driving a wagon. He was a dumb fuck track security. I can still here him now " leave the track now". While he was about to piss on himself. lol.:D I can understand Bishops window sticker getting take. He was doing donuts.

So what exactly are you supposed to do with guest passes - frame them?

I've been a hot rodder since 1968. I joined the NSRA in 1972 when I was considering having it affiliated with the car club I started that year. It didn't happen and I let my NSRA membership expire.

I've never been to an NSRA event, and I never will. For me, the last straw was reading that when Ed Roth rode his radical, hand-built custom trike halfway across the country to an NSRA event, they wouldn't let him in.

What a bunch of ignorant cocksuckers.

What their thinking is, those passes were used to get 3 other guys in, then 1 guy took the passes back to the gate to get 2 more guys in. Not what happened but thats probabaly what they were thinking.

In Richmond the guy at the front gate was real nice and told me I needed to enter through the camping gate to be a guest of my dad and his group. The guy at the camping gate let me in (without a confirmation number) but did say I'd better have it next time. The guys could not have been nicer.
Sounds like you got a dumb assed rent a cop on a power trip. That bites.

I really don't see any difference between anything that Ed Roth hath wrought out of 'glass with a home-brew plaster mold and the reproduction "phanton" glass cars that won trophies at Kazoo.....I really think that they should have let him in. The fact is, they let in a lot of "reproduction cars"....(mine included...)

and Ed was right out in front with his "weirdo" cars/bikes and his t shirt business....Rat Fink Lives!....

So I'm sitting in the Grandstand at the awards ceremony in Kazoo yesterday pointing out this year and that year car as they drove by and as they were given the awards..and all the reproduction 'glass and "phantom" cars to g/friend Marilyn as well.

Marilyn figured out pretty fast that there's a whole bunch of rodders who never busted a finger nail working on their cars....and she was a total "virgin" to the hot rod thing as of yesterday....and realized that there is another bunch of rodders that will put every dollar they can into their cars to win the $50 Trophies....and wondered out loud about the fairness of "real" cars competing with the reproduction cars...

Come to think of it...my 28 Woodie is a "reproduction" car with homebuilt coachwork and 4 new glass fenders/repop running boards and splash aprons......and a pretty much stock A chassis ('71 Ford Pinto 2.0 liter 4 banger for power) and original cowl and front sheetmetal....

Hot Rodding, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder....the so called "rule" is that it has to be pre-1949....and now I understand that they are opening some events to post 48 cars as well due to dropping attendance at events....

You should have just turned around and left with your tickets and went in another gate. What was he going to do, throw you to the ground and put you under rent-a-cop arrest?

I've worked gates at BT50's and sceurity at Brainerd Raceway and other pro road races, and after watching people trying to pull shit all day at the track, or at the gate you get fed up with how LOW people can get.
Gate admissions are collected by the properity owners and get taken off the rent of the properity for the club. So cheating the gate cost the club putting on the event money. The event orginizers are trying to keep the entrance fee for specators and entrants as low as possible, so by cheating the gate your adding to entrants and spectators cost.

  15. In my youth I rode all over this country in the back of , now my Henry-J, my old mans 36 Dodge pickup and whatever we could get to the NSRA events in every year with my dad, even the small regional events within 600 miles. My dad's membership #486 !!! If you read the following it was posted on 4-11-2004 by my dad on a thread just like this one and the event happened at the NSRA Nationals in 1985 Oklahoma City Oklahoma with me a 14 year old boy in the front seat watching the whole thing with the shitty "RENT A COP". My dad went inside and got ahold of "Walker" and all the rest of the so called leaders of the NSRA and they pretty much told him to kiss off!!! Member # 486!!!! My dad had a vendors space and had registered his 36 dodge in the show and still took one up the ass!!!! And you were right about the Trailer Queens looking for trophy's with no grease under any finger-nails!!!!!! The following is my dads post. w--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DITTO 40studedude. NSRA member # 486. Yeah, I was at Peoria in 1970. Been doing this a long time and have no intentions of stopping yet. I sent Meadors money for his first event with no intentions of going. Just wanted to help him get started. Thought we needed more than one organization to gather us all together.

I think Bubba and Walker finally realized that there are more cars out there that were made after 48, and wanted to take advantage of that. Most of the Street Rodders are getting old like me and they need new blood.

As for adding the late models, It's about time. After all, I have taken my Henry-J to lot's of NSRA events.

Thier security is/was handled by the fairground's security forces. They tried to impound my 36 dodge pu, and throw me in jail once. (I was towing a trailer with my Henry-J on it after racing at the 1st Nost Drags in Tulsa 1986.) Tried to go in the front gate and was turned away. Went to the vendors gate and they would'nt let me in. Had my vendors sticker on. Walked in and found Gilbert Bugg and Vern Walker. They told me to go drive in. Told the security guy what they said, and thats when he threatened me with towing and jail time. I parked it in the spectator parking lot and walked in and opened my booth. Tried to talk to Vern about it and got into an argument with him. He said he was "Supporting me". Told him my history with NSRA and supporting HIM since 1970 and he didn't seem to care. Layed out a couple of years and crumbled and went back?

I've known Gary Meadors for several years and he has always had time to talk to me and thank me for my participation.

Yeah, I was trying to get rich while enjoying my hobby, just like them. Tell me YOU wouldn't and make me beleive it.

Sorry for the rant. As for the topic, it's about time for them to open it up. When they get closer I will go. This time I will be legal.(51 Henry-J)

  16. My only experiences with NSRA have been here in Knoxville & at the biggie in Louisville - & with that shitty Street Scene magazine.

I joined this year so I could get the '38 into the Nats South. I've decided I'm not joining again just to get a car in though. Admittedly, I will still pay one day's admission so I can see the show. IF I can make it to Louisville next August with my '38 I guess I'll join - but only because I have to in order to get in where my friends will be.

If anyone doubts that they're making some serious $$ off the deal, stop by Vernon Walker's house sometime & check out the neon sign collection. We're talking warehouses full of old restored & original neon signs. Much of it in wooden crates stacked to the ceilings.

  17. I feel it is likely the state/fairgrounds policy. These rent-a-cop guys are all a bunch of police wannabes. They can't do the real thing so they push around the rest of us.

I went to a Nascar race several years ago. I had extra tickets to sell for a friend. As I was walking toward the gate, I held up the tickets and let everybody know they were for sale. The MAN said I could not do that on the speedway property. Across the street, where I went, there were several guys hawking tickets. I did my deal and went to the race.

I know they had problems in the Tampa show a couple of times with people getting several people in on the same pass.
My wife does not go all three days, I do, and I have never had a problem with her coming to the rear gate with my extra pass, calling me on the cell and I run out there and pick her up.
One thing different is, she has the extra pass with her when she gets there, I do not carry it out to her.
I think that most of your problem was with the rent a cops.
I do know the rent a cops pulled me and a friend over last year about "speeding" on the back roads. all we did when I pulled out was run it hard through first gear and then took it easy. That was enough for them to come hauling ass down the same road with their yellow light flashing and tell me to slow it down.

I quit going to NSRA events 10 years ago when I had my window sticker ripped out of my car by a National Guard Marine that was working the gate at the Street Rod Nats in OK city. I went in the wrong gate and when I left I went out the same way and he remembered me. He just walked up, reached in my car and ripped it off my windshield and said I was not to return. I went out the gate parked and walked back in to see what that was all about. He got in my face I said I tore away from him on my way in when he tried to stop me, I never even saw this guy on my way in? He threatened to have me arrested. He actually told me to draw fire or walk away?? I thought I was at a car event but I must have been in a life or death war situation?? My buddy pretty much had to just pull me away. NSRA Sucks I agree.

Sometimes I think the anti-NSRA sentiment is people just hate rules. ;)

I can understand why a lot of folks don't like it or won't be part of it. The best part about this hobby is nobody's forcin' ya to join and nobody said you have to go to their shows. You need to find the spot where you feel at home and enjoy it... if it ain't fun, don't do it.

As far as plastified trailer queens, I can tell you that the rank and file NSRA members don't really like them, either. Same problem in Goodguys. There are quite a few people making "picks" that I know (and watched) try to pick people who built their own and drove it there. If you want an example from Kazoo, the '35-ish gunmetal gray Dodge coupe was 100% owner built. It's surprising how many of the pro looking rods really are owner-built (over the course of many years in some cases). You can't assume just because it's super slick that they didn't do it. It might be safe to assume a trailer was involved when you don't see rock chips though. But when you look at picks from folks like PPG and other sponsors, they usually go for the pro-built pansy wagons that are lucky if they can get around the fairgrounds without puking.

As for run-ins with jerks at the gates and such... I believe there you're dealing with the host club (the guys in blue and white shirts are the only NSRA directors). They need to be aware of it because it reflects poorly not just on themselves but on the club, the NSRA (or Goodguys or whatever) and even the whole town. People have a bad experience they blame the whole damn thing and don't come back.

couldnt using non removable wrist bands solve the whole damn problem?

makes ya wonder how other events make do with lanyard style tickets.

if there are no in and out priveledges with the tickets, that should be clearly stated. Otherwise... walk right in with your tickets.

if someone tells you to stop... keep walking.

My only Kzoo show we walked up to the owner of 35 Ford on air ride. My buddy was asking him some question about the chassis. His answers for every question were: "I dunno, but it wins best paint wherever it goes." or "Not sure, but I got a Boyd's pick in Columbus." Pissed me off.

The biggest complaint that I have about the Kzoo show is that apparently the sibling lovin' hicks out there have never seen body piercings before!

In the swap meet, AND the show, there were several (read: more than one and on more than one occasion) of these goofy fucks running into other people, tripping over parts, bumping into cars, etc.; all because they were too busy checkin' me out to pay attention to where they were walkin!

Sorry guys... While I DO have a purty mouth, you're not gonna get me to squeal like a pig!

I have to add that all of the staff (at the spectator entrance, and the swap entrance) and vendors that I dealt with were very friendly, even to a funny looking guy like me!:)

I've run into that before, too, and I have to tall ya, "checkbook rodding" annoys me to no end. A lot of those guys are described in one giant word.... EGO. I guess if there is a silver lining, it's that people with more money than brains are subsidizing the pros and giving us a chance to see new ideas to snatch. I'm not talking about copying the Alumatub or anything like that... but I do look over these cars to find subtle little tricks here and there that I might be able to use ('course I do the same thing around the real hot rods, too).

And don't get me started on how many of Boyd's cars my dad has inspected for a Safety 23 sticker and flunked.

The flip side of the coin is I know some people don't have the physical means or ability to do it themselves, and I also know several folks that bought their way in, but then later took it on themselves to learn about and work on their cars themselves.... and that seems like a good deal.

BTW.... I saw this one car at Kazoo that had "Avoid the Boyd" on the back of it. Was that someone from here? LOL
