If been using Duplicolor 1620 chevy orange with good results for 20 + years . I need to order some more chevy orange engine paint, only have half a can left. Is Duplicolor still the best economical spray can chevy engine paint? https://www.summitracing.com/parts/shw-de1620 .
I bought my last can at Tractor Supply, whatever brand it was. I have found no difference to be honest in any spray bomb used on my engines
I've used Duplicolor for awhile, and it always works just fine. No complaints. Pricey, and does take awhile to dry vs some paints, but I'm usually not in a hurry. Recently I've switched to U-Pol aerosols for anything not high temp simply because they dry lightning fast, even in cold weathers. Great primers and prep too.
Yeah $$$$$ I already price shopped a few weeks ago. I thought it was just Napa's rip-off pricing. $11.99 at summit.... Everything is a rip off $$$$ anymore. Even House Paint is a rip off now $45-50-60+++ for 1 gallon of water base house paint???wtf. I painted my house year and 1/2 ago and it was 5 gallons for $50 $8.00 for a jar of mayonnaise ?
VHT, Duplicolor only. Rust-Oleum cans tend to plug up half way through can , $12-15 a can is average, get used to it, buy it now, store upside down, next year it will be $18-20 a can.
I used Eastwoods two part ceramic aerosol and was very favorably impressed. Expensive; about $30/can, but smooth spraying and durable. I'll use it again.
Duplicolor from NAPA here. Countless mot0rcycle engines, several flatheads, it has never let me down.
Shop around on eBay, sometimes you find a 2 pack or 4 pack that brings the price down to around $9-10 per can. It’s brutal at the auto parts stores. Same with carb cleaner. I’m looking for the early Pontiac powder blue engine paint (non-metallic). Looks like the one I used to use from PlastiKote, is no longer made.
Duplicolor rattle cans run to about $18 Aussie pesos currently (about $US12). Must be the only thing cheaper/similar priced here than over the pond. https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p...-aerosol-paint-holden-grey---340g/537358.html Hilborn nozzles on the other hand I'm going to have to sell a kidney for. Cheers, Harv
I bought a can of VHT black locally, came to almost $20. Someone gave me some cans of paint at work, I painted my SBC with Plastikote Chevy orange, still on there.
Tractor Supply was selling off their old stock Rustoleum for $5 per can so, I bought all 10 or so of their Orange and re-named it "Not Chevy Orange". Painted my 283 with it.
I put a real light coat of silver header paint first , just enough to cover your engine then put on the chevy orange. It takes less paint to cover and is brighter , makes the paint pop
I'm still using Duplicolor and having great results. It holds up well to temps, and oil or gas on it.
If I rattle can an engine, I use Van Sickle tractor enamel and the corresponding primer. Seems to provide a thicker, smoother coating and still takes the heat and oils just as well as Duplicolor engine enamel. Did this old oil burner in Oliver Gray last summer. It has held up quite well in the truck.
Reality is, aside from engines with exposed ports like a Pontiac, your engine won't exceed operating temps dictated mainly by the thermostat. I have used numerous paints not designed for engines with good results. Prep work is paramount to paint adhesion. My first Mentor believed in and had me paint my 283 with red latex brushed on. I wouldn't do it again, but that stuff was not coming off or discoloring at all. No need for super high heat paints.
