I've got a Rochester 1B that needs rebuilt or replaced. I called the carburetor shop and was told it's too old for a replacement. The base that bolts to the intake is stamped 7003588 up where the bowl bolts on is stamped 67. Engine is having idling issues and no power when accelerating. When I can get it to idle, spraying starting fluid on the outside smooth's it out. I replaced the top and bottom gaskets, started it, no change and now leaking at top gasket. Haven't torn the whole thing apart as the leaking gasket seems to be the issue, new gasket made is worse, and was running fine days ago. Finding a replacement with the linkage to connect opposite the valve cover side is a problem, all the replacements I've seen the linkage is between the carb and valve cover. Need pics and what motor it's on. I have a 261 Chevy 6 that I went with a Carter YF for a 300 Ford, slight mod for linkage. The Rochester Bs like to leak from the lid, Carter YFs are good replacements if you want to go that way.
May I ask why, if it was running fine a few days ago, why did you change gaskets, etc? Could you have over tightened the screws and warped something? And where are you spray at? And when you do that and it smooths out, does the speed of the engine increase?
In the FWIW category: Carburetors (even Rochester type B's) go bad over decades (well, the B maybe over a few years rather than decades); and ignition systems go bad in the blink of an eye. Before buying a different carburetor, I would suggest: (1) compression test (2) ignition test (3) if you are absolutely, positively, certain that it is the carburetor, then you might look for a Carter YF. Carter offered several different model YF units that were specifically designed for a Chevy 194. Carter YF 3711s, 4044s, 4072s, 4080s, 4145s, 4339s, 4368s, and 4387s were all designed and calibrated for various years, applications, and transmissions with a 194. Jon
Thank you guys for the replies. Budget 36-I replaced the top gasket because it was leaking fuel, may not be the problem but was leaking nonetheless. Over tightened maybe, but I was being very aware of what I was doing. Sprayed around the top gasket, it smoothed out and engine rpm increased. Jon-all very valid points, and those are next items on the list. Electrical can fail all of the sudden. I do appreciate everyone taking time to try and help me with this. Ryan
