I recently picked up a gently used set of vintage Isky anti pump up lifters. I plan to send them in to get resurfaced. They are 202-HY lifters for a SBC and of the type he used to sell that had the second oil bleed hole in the side. Does anyone have copy of the original instructions that would have come with the lifters? I'm curious what preload they were intended to be run with.
Preload can vary depending on what the customer use is. Most will only do a 1/4 turn for performance engines, but for a street driven engine where you don't want to readjust again, some guys do 3/4-1 full turn. I always like 1/4 turn on any flat tappet Chevy cam.
I guess my question is whether these need to be treated any differently than other hydraulic lifters since they have the second bleed port.
I've always pumped up my hyd. lifters with a Plews can of oil I'm using in the engine. I use a tip that I sharpened ion my lathe, as it fits nicely into the oil holes of the lifters. Some tennis-shoe M.F. saw me doing this and said, "Oh, you're SUPPOSED to set those in a pan of oil and let them soak the oil in, on their own." "Supposed by whom?" That was my question... I've read that one on Comp Cams OLD site, still pump them up to my satisfaction... and Yes, 1/4 turn is the norm. Puts the plunger where I like it... Never a problem.
If the engine goes into valve float the plunger will rise and that uncovers the relief port in the Superlifter releasing the excess oil. That allows the valves to return to their seats preventing loss of compression. I’d adjust them like a normal lifter. I do the same as @1971BB427 , a quarter turn past zero lash.
Ah roller lifters are the way and the light, you're wasting your time (that was my daily dose of smart ***ery)
I installed a set in the '70's in a small block with 350/350 cam. Worked great. As others have said, adjust them as with factory lifters.
Thanks! Oddly enough I bought a second set of these on ebay yesterday that are NOS. Not sure if they'll have directions or not but I sure appreciate you posting them up!
