Quiet baffles

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Richard D, Sep 18, 2006.

  1. I did a search (12 pages!) but didn't really find an answer. I want to make my own headers that come straight off the heads, eight individual pipes, maybe 1 3/4" or 2". I don't want to run them under the car or back like lake headers.
I saw using washers, perforated pipe, VW and Harley baffles, always the same answer: they sound good. What's good? Has anybody used this to p*** inspection? I'm in Texas. I want relatively quiet, I know, I know, be cool and cops won't h***le you. Not good enough. I also absolutely do not want it to pop and backfire on decelleration! Am I asking too much?

    How about these:

    Or the longer version:

Each A cylinder is about the same size as a big hog motor's and puts out a whole lot less bang. The 12" versions ought to be quiet enough for Texas law. In Houston they don't much bother unbaffled Harleys with wake-the-dead sound levels so even a loudish A motor shouldn't cause much alarm. Popping or backfiring isn't all that much influenced by what kind of exhaust you have although obviously it's gonna be louder the less restrictive the exhaust is.

Lots of things---primarily carburetion and ignition issues. Running that many carbs can be a tuning nightmare and can easily result in the wrong slug of rich mixture being at the wrong place at the wrong time. You need to ask a lot of questions on the board here about how to get that setup running right.

bunch o stuff, exhaust leaks, timing issues...not always a bad sign though, alot of built motors with free flowing exhaust will pop on deceleration

  8. I'm not so much worried about it being a bad sign, i just hate the way it sounds(just my opinion).

I have a corkscrew baffle from J&P cycles in my pipes. It does the gurgling thing, but I think it sounds cool.
