Technical Rim ID ? For hubcap purpose

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Mike Ribeye, Mar 24, 2023.

  1. Rims came in the car 14x6 in front 15x8 in back gm bolt pattern. I'm in process of stripping and painting. I want to do baby moons and trim rings but not sure about the center section its tapered and has an ID of 7.5 inch. I just wanna get some baby moons any ideas ? 20230323_135957.jpg 20230323_135957.jpg 20230323_135829.jpg

Those bumps between the lugs look like they were welded on by somebody after the factory.

Many of the cheapo aftermarket baby Moons fit a standard size wheel. Measure the outer diameter of the hubcap nubs and you should to be able to find a cap based on that size.

igured it out. They are standard "4 bump " gm wheels except the previous owner had cut and weld filled 2 of the 4 off. Why I dunno maybe he wanted smoothies but didn't wanna pay for smoothies. But now I think Iunderstand why I have a high speed vibration. New wheels ordered.

    Well that's different!

I'm no rocket surgeon but I'd be finding a different pair of wheels too... :D

I wonder what the purpose of the tack welded nuts between the lug holes? looks like they had some sort of short carriage bolts in them in the top pictures? wonder why?

I also would like to know what's up with the welded-on nuts and the shaved bumps, someone put a lot of effort into doing that. I don't think I'd trust it either, but I'd love to know the "why" of why it was done.

  9. well the carriage bolts with the nuts were there so he could mount a modern ford ranger hubcap there i was never fond of it so out they go. sadly the gentleman I bought the car from passed less than a year later so we will never know.

  10. The nuts probably provided adjustability so the PO could "fine tune" the cap fitment. A lot of Rube Goldburg-ery instead of doing it right! "Vibration be damned... full speed ahead!"

I'm thinking that that is to emulate some "rally wheel" of who the hell knows what brand hubcap that I used to fight with in the tire store 50 years ago.

I see you have new wheels on the way .but back to the original ? I think those might be modified gm save a spare centers welded in different hoops. I have some that are 4 3/4 & 5" duel pattern. I see yours only have 2 hub cap bumps
